I love Cowboy Bebop and I hate SJWs, but I am unironically fine with this pick. I knew they were going to shove a token into it somewhere, and it might as well be the character who is literally named Jet Black.

Honestly, the last time I went to go rewatch Cowboy Bebop I was surprised to see that Jet was white, not black. In my mind I had imagined him as being a black guy, probably because of his name.

It's fine desu. He gives off the same kind of vibes as the original character (albeit a younger version). His skin colour doesn't really matter in this case and seems almost incidental. It isn't - because Netflix - but still. I'm fine with this.

Jet is a jaded ex cop with a struggling crew who can barely afford food or bills, Spike is eternally lost and living in the moment, Valentine is fleeing her past and relatively arrogant (same as spike). You know what I'd do? Cast two of the people that Netflix already knows of from altered carbon. Joel Kinnaman (dye/alter his hair) for Spike, since at least he's tall and lean enough + looks athletic, and Will Yun Lee as Jet. I know that Jet is suppose to be a pretty Big Guy, but hollywood and do something with that. Fay Valentine can go to any woman that can act really. That girl from It as Ed. Sounds like I'd still be within budget.

Jet is like late 30's, no more than 40/41 at most in Bebop. Spike is like late 20's / early 30's, Faye honestly could be anywhere in 20's / early 30's. Jet looks old and compared to the rest he comes off as a grumpy old dude, but he's relatively young. He's just a burned out ex cop that's seen too much shit.

This is my favorite anime. I’m looking at a framed Bebop poster on my wall right now. I’ve watched it multiple times over the last 17 years. I honestly don’t think I’ll even watch the Netflix show. It’s not sour grapes. It’s just at this point we know what to expect and it’s not interesting. Even the lame forced controversy is boring.

I enjoy things that are closer to the source material. I like when casting brings a character to life how I imagined it.

Scar Jo in ghost in the shell was not good - she's too nice of a person in her core being. Brie Larson was a fucking travesty in captain marvel - she's not sexy and freewheeling. Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher - he's not a huge fucking dude who takes absolutely no shit from idiots.

As for skin color - it's an element of the character. Did Gamora NEED to be green? No. She could have been a black alien. It changes nothing on a script level to make her green or blue or black or yellow. But she was green and it was awesome that the effort was put in to make her closer to the original character. I like that effort. It's nice.

Straying from the character with casting for any reason is a risk and I'd like it done less.

I want asian character to stay asian.
