The ovular ones, specifically, are Mon Calamari ships, which are ships that double as city buildings in an underwater civilization. They are used by the Rebellion because:
A. At one point, the Mon Cala people (or many of them, at least) had a mass exodus from their home world, taking their ship buildings with them.
B. Because they are built for underwater pressure, they are designed with thick armor and have good shields, which, obviously, makes them perfect for combat.
This, too. The FO have good ship designs in general, except for Starkiller Base. The Lambda shuttle, especially, which always felt out of place to me as the Imperial version, looks much more sleek and intimidating with the FO.

Venator, MC80 and Providence are the only ones that matter. The Star Destroyer has more powerful weapons but it's hangars were pitiful, had virtually no anti Starfighter weapons, and the standard tie fighters were garbage.
The former three ships can just stay out of range and have their fighters pick it clean.
