Worst thing is, they never tried to set up any salvation for Nick's damaged mind, Cas detected that Luci left more scars than was supposed at the first glance, but after that - nothing, they what, decided that he was too far gone? Nick was never going to have salvation they tried to talk him out of it a couple times already. Franly I'm just plain tired of Lucifer and Nick that I'm happy they seem to have their arc ending from the looks of it. I'm not at all too buttblasted about Jack going evil, it's been a question since his conception and is the central theme of Dabb-Singer era, and an obvious build up for the past 5 episodes

Considering how the season has been written, Dean and Sam would probably have agreed with Mary.
The narrative of this season tries to signal that Jack is out of control, but he hasn't done anything wrong. Like in the last episode, the show implies that is was Jack's fault that the stupid woman was wounded after she ran towards the angel blade that Jack was rapidly moving around.

Jack killing Nick wasn't the only problem, it's his wanton use of his powers that destroys what's left of his soul, if he even has it. Anael said it's gone completely.

Donatello told Jack to do what Sam and Dean would do, and considering that they often murder low-level monsters that haven't even killed anyone intentionally, killing Nick before he can try again—which would have costed even more lives—was what they would have done.
