Same here, I remember a bunch of kids challenging each other to "duels" that usually just involved a thumb war or something. Simpsons still had a lot of momentum when that episode aired and most people hadn't given up on it yet, I think it might genuinely be one of the last widely-remembered episodes, even putting memes aside.
