i think the main thing is that PTA took the rough plot and used it to craft a film that captures some sense of theme and essence of the book, that along with PTA's craft of shot, acting, direction, set and costume make it a great film that many people watch and get confused and upset because they dont get it

Absolutely. The entire movie is 10/10 and probably Kubrick's best work, but most faggots just remember the verbal beatdown by the drill sergeant. What's worse is that they often miss the point of the character's shittalking.

Because it's a spy flick that where all the action scenes are delivered through tension in scenery and dialogue and not with gunfights and explosions. So subhuman normalfags think it's boring.

You guys are all smoking something. All the energy and excitement of a Pynchon story and what do we get? A mumble core movie where a dude wanders from scene to scene and largely talks in shot reverse shot with somebody else. I don’t have a problem with a story being confusing, or ambiguous, but this goes beyond that. There’s hardly anything in the movie to fucking look at, I can’t hear half the conversation because the sound mix is absolute shit, and I don’t understand the stakes of even the scene in and of itself, not even its relation to the larger plot.

Pynchon, meanwhile, I can understand the stakes from moment to moment of events in his novels - there’s an emotional core to scenes that make me care. A researcher is trying to figure out how this guy’s erections relate to missile strikes, and he’s in love with girlfriend, and it’s WWII. Boom. Got it “They are in love. Fuck the war.” I’ve got an emotional hook for that scene at least

I half agree with you. The movie comes close but misses the mark. I felt that the viewer is mostly left blamelessly confused instead of with the feeling of paranoia but excitement at the quirky rat maze that the movie should've elicited. Its easy to see the direction that was wanted though but it definitely falls short. On second viewing its a great movie but that alone makes it less than amazing.
