Is Chicago really as comfy as this show portrayed it?

I am an old fag and saw this show as a kid. I remember the first season it was a straight shooting show about a low income black family trying to make it in America. I don't think it focused on race as it did poverty more. Then it got threatened with cancellation since no one cared and it wasn't funny so they added Urkel and the rest was history. If you watch the first couple episodes without him tonally it's night and day.

And then it became the Urkel Show, which was just sci-fi comedy with a dash of special episodes. I stopped giving a shit about the show after Urkel completely centralized the show.
