I still don't understand where that claim comes from. I can't make a single parallel between the characters or plot points other than the mc being good at fighting.

Aramis Knight as M.K., a seemingly average teenage boy who is anything but. Lurking inside him is a dark energy that the Widow wants to harness into a weapon. He is likely based on Sun Wukong ("the Monkey King")

originally it was supposed to be about MK going on a journey and unlocking his powers like the monkey king journeying with the monk but sonny and the badlands politics proved more popular with fans so they changed direction between season 1 and 2. That's part of the reason early season 2 is such a mess.

Daniel Wu as Sunny, regent (head clipper) to the Badlands' most powerful baron, Quinn. Despite being a man of conviction, he is very loyal to Quinn. Very skilled and proficient in various styles and weapons, he is considered to be one of the deadliest clippers in the Badlands. In season 3, he is referred to explicitly as "Sanzo", another name for Tang Sanzang. Therefore, he is based on Tang Sanzang ("Monk Tripitaka").

And Monk Tripitaka is a constant damsel in distress (male). Name notwithstanding, they're nothing alike.

That was a good fight sequence

The show can at least deliver on this front
