I know I have said some things on other videos but this scene is epic in more ways than one.
It's really a scene where the director/writers are educating us on the way Romans saw war and friends. This scene in particular demonstrates Egypt's ideas that enemy's need to be crushed and essentially ridiculed. Caesar and Rome have different ideas, they might have been enemy's on the battlefield but Caesar has not forgotten Pompeii's position as a consul of Rome and in some respect friends.
Weather or not this is accurate to the Rome 2000 years ago remains to be seen. But as a TV show, it's incredible at setting the Roman civilization apart from others by way or politics and "honor".

Where are you getting the idea that Egypt wanted enemies to be humiliated? Most Hellenistic wars ended with treaties - it was the Romans who crushed and humiliated their foes, which is one reason the Hellenistic states had such trouble coping with Rome.
Pothinus and Achillas decided to kill Pompey because they wanted to back a winner. Caesar made a fuss about it just like in the show, and perhaps he was sad since he and Pompey and never hated each other and actually always gotten on rather well.
However I would imagine Caesar was in fact quite relieved by Pompey's execution. What would he have done with a captive Pompey? Killing him would have gone against his policy of clementia, but letting him live would give his enemies a focal point to rally around.
