Just used the early inheritance my grandma gave me and bought a Red Weapon 8k. I plan on taking it to Thailand when I can save up some cash for a trip and make a nature documentary. Anyone else have experience with the Red Weapon 8k?
Red Weapon 8k - good for docos?

Your mom has experience with my purple weapon.
You'd have been better off buying a bunch of thai hookers and filming them with your phone
seems fucking retarded.
I have experience with money so I would never buy such an expensive camera
Why does a digital camera need active cooling?
Terrible choice for docs friend. Typically when filming docs you want something that travels light and quick.
Just to use the red, you are going to need lenses, rails, grip mounts, a hefty triod to hold it all up, oh and reds are light hogs..... Not to mention the dozens of red proprietary cards you have to shoot on.....
Also did I mention the fan is garbage and ruins audio????? Oh and let's not forget they are notoriously bad about dealing with heat....
So no for a doc I recommend the Black Magic Pocket camera, Metta bones adapter with a 24-105 and a 35 lens. Bam easy, also cheaper. Yeah you will have to color correct in post but it's still a better deal.
>I spend a bunch of money on (insert thing here)
>Does anyone know if it's good for what I plan on using it for?
Based brainlet
Don't go to Thailand- they chop off tourists' heads for fun.
just get a sony alpha, fuck wasting thousands and thousands on a camera like that
this
go somewhere safe and sanitised and make sure you book a tourist trip package and purchase plenty of souvenirs just in case you experience something real or genuine
I'm mildly worried. I'm scheduled to film a movie in two weeks from now using my BlackMagic Cinema Camera, but the thing is garbage and freezes up after using it for 10+ minutes, and my iPhone video quality is awful. What do?
Yup all this. A terrible camera to handle with a 1 man crew and terrible for run and gun shooting.
You are also not winning anything in terms of the image. Because a red famously looks trash without mass a mounts of lights.
RED cameras suck. You could have purchased a regular DSLR camera and you wouldn't have had any noticeable difference in quality.
>but muh 8k!
If having the biggest resolution is what you wanted, then you should have gotten a film camera. A regular 35mm camera already surpasses 4k in terms of image quality.
Fuck that dslr sucks, plus clip rate isn't condusive to long interviews. Having to cut and reroll a few dozen times a day sucks.....
The only reason you should buy a camera like a RED or an Alexa is if you actually want to start a business in videography or cinematography. Don't buy one if you're just making your own projects.
If you aren't interested in producing content for money, just buy a cheap camera like a Blackmagic Pocket 4k and make your own work, then later on you can try to get a directing agent when you want to get hired for commercial jobs etc.
i own a drone that was made to carry one of those
Nice april fools joke bro
Just buy a C300 like every other documentary filmmaker on the fucking planet. There's no need to make your life harder with a Red or some other bullshit.

I disagree, RED has a look that can't easily be achieved with lower-end cameras. Even if it's more hassle to work with, the results might be worth it. The only better option from a visual standpoint is the Alexa obviously.
For examples watch Sean Dunne's doc work, specifically Florida Man (shot on a Red Epic MX)
However I still think OP made a poor purchasing decision, because this is just a personal film and not some sort of business investment
if you did this, you are retarded. Buy a black magic or a gh5

Cant he rent it out?
SLR's are limited to shitty 8bit when shooting video.
Sure, I guess he could. Although to be honest RED cameras don't fare very well on the rental market I've heard, typically if you're gonna rent a camera you go with the best, which nowadays is an Alexa Mini.
You do realize that movies have been filmed with iPhones now, right?
Buy gear for your skill level. Some fuckhead playing fortnite every weekend doesn't need SLI 2080 Ti's.
Some faggot alchy doesn't need Johnny Walker Green.
You don't need that shit.
Buy a super portable cheap camera and a bunch of memory cards/replaceable batteries.
The movie is going to be you shooting a fuck ton of shit then you EDITING it well. Pirate some software and learn it. Edit as you travel.
I mostly agree with you, but as I've said earlier ITT this is bad advice if you actually want to make a living as a cinematographer. Owning a professional camera gives you huge advantages when it comes to landing jobs in the industry.
