I liked the original Ghost in the Shell, it was visually excellent and philosophically interesting. I also felt a connection to the cyborg (or whatever) and there were some great action sequences.
What other films manage to be visually beautiful, compelling, and philosophical?
Definitey, they both do a lot of the same things really well
Jackson Long
Ghost in the Shell Akira Memories (Magnetic Rose mostly) Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion Alita: Battle Angel
Sebastian Lee
Magnetic Rose is amazing.
Angel Johnson
>that sequence How do these crazy Japs do it? Apart from the fact that it's animated FLAWLESSLY and it's not rotoscoped how do they get past the sensors?? No American studio would ever allow boobies or blood to be shown in animation, also everyone has to be pixar-like 3D European animation would show boobies and nudity but they would have the most repulsive ugly creature because in modern Europe ugliness passes as culture sad
>What other films manage to be visually beautiful, compelling, and philosophical? Apart from the excellent suggestions in this thread and putside of the sci-fi genre but strictly animated I would suggest everything from Satoshi Kon, especially >Perfect Blue >Millenium Actress (don't miss this, it's incredible) >Paprika >Tokyo Godfathers (not my favorite but it certainly has a charm) Satoshi Kon also made a series >Paranoia Agent which may also be nice but I haven't checked out yet Speaking of anime series with interesting philosophical questions there is >Serial Experiments Lain Personally I didn't like it that much, it felt forced but you may enjoy it, it had some great imagery though If you want a really nicely executed hero's journey and a beautiful film you can't go wrong with >Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Another interesting film, half sci-fi, half philosophical questions but extremely lyrical and beautiful is >The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Finally, since this list is mostly Japanese animation I'd like to mention a forgotten Disney production that I find unique and very enjoyable, striking imagery and first class world building that deserves more recognition >Atlantis And of course don't miss >Robot on the Road It's a short but it's very good youtube.com/watch?v=hSlpBNjIQwA
Great I suggest you watch the Satoshi Kon films in this order >Perfect Blue >Paprika >Millenium Actress >Tokyo Godfathers Millenium Actress is great but you must get used to Kon's film making first
Nolan Scott
Serial Experiments Lain, better than EVA in my opinion, also Texhnolyze and Ergo Proxy.
>eva >better than anything H*ck off watch a real mecha show instead of pretentious "deconstructive" garbage, you might actually enjoy yourself
Cooper Wright
>Watch a real mecha show
I watched a lot. Some of them are barely entertaining and the ones influenced by EVA tend to be the best. But most of them are crap.
Jason Powell
>he thinks eva is deconstructive Brainlet spotted EVA is a character study on human affairs and individuality "Mechas" in EVA is just a plot device and make for some kick ass action scenes which all end up to feed into the human affair and individuality study
Carson Cook
This is objectively false, on the basis that the best mecha show is nearly a decade older than eva and the exact opposite of it
Curious: which ares of philosophie are you all interested in the most? Ethics and morality? Existentialism? etc? Because when people say they're interested in philosophy, they never specify areas - not that it's required.
Not OP but for me it's ethics and morality because a moral compass can help in life Existentialism seems like philosophy for philosophy's sake which could be interesting but only after you have the basics of your life figured out

Eva is far more than a mere mecha show.
And Gunbuster is great, but it's not even the second best work by Anno.
Thomas Brown
Ghost in the shell innocence is good as well

reminder that Major Motoko is basically Rei Ayanami on steroids.
