they didn't try TOO hard imo, a mix of limitations in software and a need to make it look somewhat realistic. wouldn't surprise me if some of the animations were just tracings of an actual octopus layered over his face

I had a revelation rewatching the 3rd movie the other day. I think the reason why I still like the Jack Sparrow character even though everyone says he's overused is because in every action or escape scene he's got this permanent look on his face like he has no idea what's going on or how he's still alive. Then he has a brief moment of lucidity, he quickly does something ridiculous to escape the current danger, and looks around again like he can't believe that stupid bullshit worked. It reminded me of a Jackie Chan performance, and is way more engaging than some endlessly competent superhero.
