to the point that Yog-Sothoth is actually part of the story and they make mention of At the Mountains of Madness and quote the Necronomicon.

it was intentionally hard to follow at certain points, and it reads like an acid trip stream of conciousness in others (also intentional) but it really is a masterpiece of conspiracy lit.

Blair Witch project I'll give you as good, but it serves as a proof of concept more than anything. It's like saying Nosferatu is the best horror movie because it was one of the first.

you're right to a certain extent and I actually realized after the fact that lovecraftian wasn't really a good word to describe it.
it's more like his work is important in the universe that it takes place in. and to be fair there are references to a lot of different things like Crowley and DeSade and even Ian Fleming. one of the coolest parts about it is that it has an international scope, like the story encompasses people all over the world and it just kind of jumps around at random. so it's not really cosmic per se but it's certainly global, which I suppose is its own separate thing.

and unfortunately I can't really defend the actual lovecraftian aspects of it without completely spoiling the ending or even just giving too much away about any of the good stuff.
I'd actually say parts of it reminded me of Dagon and leave it at that.

and it was kind of fun to try to remember and keep track of all of the moving parts and see the picture start to come together.

The jokes/characters are just lazy do-overs of the film. Matt Berry nails every line, as always, but the fonejacker guy just doesn't cut it. The woman is largely pointless. Energy vampire guy seemed funny in his little intro vid, but we get it, he's boring.
