I don't think he has to worry about acting or having to do pretty much anything at this point to advance his career. If you get showered with money just for showing up, where's the motivation to do anything beyond that?

When he realized that he had Disney by the balls. He’s getting paid more than any other actor in history just to phone it in. That should tell you all you really need to know about how he really feels about them and where they’ve taken the character. He wanted to give us something memorable and great. Disney wanted to give us nice, safe, bankable mediocrity.

part of the reason he got away with the role is the role itself is about a dude playing a dude who is playing another dude. It's not a white actor being darkened up for a role.
