To be fair, running to Zalem isn't the worst plan when he gets chased by the Factory enforcers, the city is sealed off, and it's what he always wanted to do.
Waiting for Alita to return wasn't going to work, and he'd have to rely on his street smarts to stay hidden or something if he wasn't going to try for Zalem.
I guess those morons needed even more monologuing from Hugo. I guess using dialogue and actions to explain characters is too hard for morons to understand. "Hey I wouldn't hang out with you if you weren't from Zalem, bitch!" or something like that.

I wouldn't take it that far. She didn't even know whose body it was. She's a houseguest wearing the dead daughter's left-behind clothing at that point.
I see the interest and curiosity she shows in Hugo as her own real emotions, but they're just inhibited by the disillusionment and grief of her memories. It's like she's seeing the world for the first time, much like some of us would have loved to see our favorite movie for the first time again. That's not possible for the audience, but we kind of get to experience that vicariously through Alita.

I've been here off and on since at least 2005, maybe 2004 when people linked meme jpegs in IRC. The film and anime forums I used to hang out on don't even exist anymore, but Yea Forums is still here. So although I never left completely (lurked a bit on Yea Forums, /m/ and /k/), I sure increased my posting after seeing his movie.
I just never got around to reading it - I went into the mecha stuff pretty hard. I thought Alita was just a generic cute assassin girl manga. That's how it was described to me, but evidently that was completely wrong. Had I known it was a genuine cyberpunk sci fi story with a fair bit of body horror, I would have been all over it.

Akira touched me though Alita didn't really. Maybe it's superficial style of substance stuff but the sountrack in combination with the art oozes soul. The story works for what it's supposed to do and manages to generate a decent trajectory towards a satisfying climax. Alita might work as a trilogy but the arc didn't move me same with the ending.

Basically I think Tetsuo had to take the drugs in order to keep himself together actually and stay in control but eventually he started mutating out of existence and I assume Akira was the one who did put him back together to his bidding.
