Where do I start playing Sonic?

Obviously the original isn't a bad place to start. Sonic Generations is an option, since it has both classic 2D gameplay and the newer 3D style. That way you can decide which you like more and can go from there. Sonic 06 is probably the only one I would say absolutely to avoid.

The first Sonic Adventure is most forgiving.

Play Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 + Knuckles. Then stop if you're sensible.
If you want more crazy 2D levels, then play Sonic CD and Sonic Mania.
If you want a good racer, play Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed.
If you want a good 3D Sonic game, you're out of luck. But Sonic Generations is reasonably well executed.
