Because the US has more regulations on banning smoking. You can't even smoke outside in a lot of places in the US. Unheard of here.

a lot of the popularity of weed has been due to the illegality of it. now that it's been legalized I don't think it's thought of as being very "cool" anymore.
to keep it Yea Forums related, throughout the 90's and especially the 00's we had weed genre movies like Half Baked and whatever Seth Rogan was doing. these movies are no longer being made because there is no more mystique to the drug. it's old hat and bland. It's very much your mother's and father's drug of choice.
this Vice stuff is the only media I've seen glorifying weed or talking about it at all in a long time. partly, because Vice is very out of touch and a shell of its former self now.
