I think those stormtroopers came down from Vader's ship specifically to look for the droids after the other stormtroopers who searched the escape pod found tracks indicating droids had been in it

It had important information on it, information they wanted to retrieve. It just seemed like they jettisoned the plans to hide their crime, and even if it had droids they weren't exactly going to be chartering a ship and getting off planet.

Lucas must've really liked this one because it's probably the only one of these illustrations I've seen survive relatively unscathed into the final picture.

It always seemed to me that the exhaust port was surrounded by turrets near it on the surface, so they had to enter the trench further away where it wasn't as heavily guarded.
