If your debt is overwhelming and you prove you can't pay yes, just like that. That's why you need to make yourself look as poor as possible, if not you won't qualify for debt wiping but instead debt rearranging

If you qualify for chapter 7 (debt wiping) they will take most of your assets, car, house, etc in exchange for the wiping. Another downside is that you get blacklisted for a couple of years, I believe 5,so you aren't able take loans and shit.
