It was a waste of his talent, for sure.

I'm of the opinion that "ruined" Thief and the Cobbler might be a better scenario than if the movie had been completed as intended; if Williams had just made the perfect animated movie, as intended, people could either ignore it, say it's overrated, or say it actually sucks, like they commonly do with near perfect animated movies like Redline, Akira, Feherlofia, etc. But since it's technically unfinished and never will be, it's impossible to convincingly criticize. It gets to be perfect forever by virtue of being irreparably damaged from the outset

The 2013 work print is a pretty close approximation to what the final product would have been and it's not good, outside of the animation quality in the finished sections. Richards desperately needed producers to slap him around and take the screenplay and editing away from him so that someone who understood pacing and narratives could have taken the reins and let him do the animation.
Instead he wasted 25 years of his life on a barely watchable mess with some nice ideas and sequences.

It's sad, but at least you have some great animation to show for it.
We will never see Jodorowsky's Dune. Just give me the film book at least.
