Most likely it will be an alternate universe created by Manhattan to see how events would have played out changing some things. Maybe by removing himself from the equation (so that they don't have to spend too much on effects for him).

i know a guy doing vfx on the show and he says it's weird and bad, like borderline smallville with watchmen characters. should have just been a 12 ep maxi series with one episode per issue, but i guess the movie did enough right that now we're never getting a truly proper adaptation. sad.

Also, I didn't read any of the new shit DC wrote about him but I think the made him creating universes and shit canon.
In the end any of this expanded universe about Watchmen just does whatever the fuck they want.

Its a fanfiction alternate future timeline. I bet if they want to link it more to Watchmen then they pull to make it relevant to all who saw the movie or read the novel.
