Star Wars would still have been great without Empire Strikes Back because It tells a complete story, Vader is shot down and the Death Star is destroyed, main conflict resolved, nearly perfect movie complete. This one though you can't help but feel blue balled by that ending, it's so abrupt.

Idk, i felt like it was a lot like a new hope where the conflict in focus was resolved (her finding out who she is, her goal, and her enemies at the time being vanquished). In new hope vader survives and theres still the emperor and whole empire to still deal with. Its definetely more of an open ended story in Alita, but with all the material that cameron wants to "faithfully" adapt the manga, i felt it was the right decision to get people on board for a sequel.

That about as good as my chances to travel to US. Have hope.

That's not the main conflict, the empire built a death star and is blowing up planets by the end of the movie they've resolved that conflict. They didn't introduce the emperor yet that comes in the sequel, as does the revelation that Vader survived, where they do set up a larger conflict, because Star Wars stands on it's own without it's sequels. Even without a "Star Wars 2" Star Wars would feel like a complete movie.

This movie sets up this guy who is controlling people from the shadows (well really the floating city) and is effectively enslaving everyone in the city below, by the end of the movie nothing has been resolved she killed one pawn of dozens. It'd be like if Star Wars ends not no the destruction of the Death Star but with Luke just recusing the princess and shooting a few storm troopers on the way out and just leaving that up in the air. It'd be blatant sequel bait and it ruins movies that would otherwise be good.

I've read the manga 15 years ago, and since Cameron announced the live action adaption, I ve been thinking occasionally about how to adapt it.
The thing is, there is no real solution, the story is just to big. Either rape the original story just to create some conclusion to the first act or stay faithful to the original.

Nobody complained about a lacking conclusion of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, so IMHO nobody should do the same thing to Alita.

I wouldn't be surprised if scenes were forcibly cut for a shorter run time. Hoping for an extended edition

Key difference there was Lord of the Rings were all shot at once, they didn't leave it up in the air if there was even going to be a Two Towers or Return of the King those were coming regardless of how Fellowship did. Lord of the Rings is essentially one 9-hour movie that was cut into parts.

That is one way around it, but more pressingly you can also just construct a movie that stands on its own without sequels. Iron-Man works without Iron-Man 2 or the rest of the MCU, hell The Incredible Hulk is probably a better example because that one didn't get a sequel and plans for Ed Norton's hulk sequels were scrapped but the movie itself still works. Same goes for Star Wars, Lucas had a grand vision for a series of films, the studio only gave him one movie so he knew he had to change it to work on it's own.

Actually the opposite is true, look at all those trilogies and film franchises out there, the first one almost always stands on it's own. You can basically go through the whole list and nearly every successful franchise or film series started with a movie that works as a one off that then got sequels appended onto it. Lord of the Rings is a special case where it was shot more or less as one big movie, another example of this is Kill Bill but that was one movie cut into two parts. Then you can skirt around the problem of not resolving conflicts and leaving plot threads dangling because in those cases you should really look at the total work rather than the individual parts. When you do break them up that's you encounter people complaining about Return of the King's dozens of endings.

All of these trilogies are NOT adapted from one single epic story. Except Lord of the Rings. You can't compare them with Alita.

There are only 2 ways to adapt Alita: create an standalone arc which means derivate far away from the original or stay with the original.
