This is endlessly self sustaining because it combines cheap marketing tactics with cheap movie-making, meaning that it doesn't take much work for a flick to break even. In addition there is no shortage of trend-following cretins who will gladly toe the line and go to see a Marvel movie because "well, all my friends saw it, I gotta see it too!". Capeshit is this generation's Star Wars.
Will it keep going forever? I don't think so. Nothing lasts forever, of course, but they'll hit their fatigue eventually. Nu Star Wars has hit its fatigue, with each new installment drawing fewer and fewer people. But first, Disney needs to release a blunder, which I don't see happening. As it stands the Avengers are essentially too big to fail, because Disney's viral marketing tactic and corner-cutting ensures that the movie will at least break even (unlikely) or make hundreds of millions (very likely).

They are important to us on an instinctual level, which is why there are so many of them but they are still popular.
