this. you're not allowed to kill people just because they've committed a crime. if you have to, that's one thing. but if you decide on the spot to kill somebody for being a criminal, you skip the whole judicial system we have set up to deal with criminals. It might not make sense to someone personally involved in the crime/confrontation, but on a larger scale our criminal justice system protects our whole society from abuses of power (in theory). It doesn't function perfectly, but sometimes people become lawyers and politicians or find other ways to get involved in changing it for the better.

He chased them away from the property, after the threat had stopped. Then he took the unarmed one and curb stomped him to death. Shooting at the car driving away is attempted murder and the curb stomping was murder.

Got lucky that it was in the non-camera-phone era and only his and his family's testimony was what the jury had to go on. If it had been recorded, he would have had no legal recourse and went to jail for life. But since those nigs were legit stealing his car, and were armed, a good lawyer can argue a lot of different things.
