I was surprised what they got in for a pg13. Yeah a lot of the body horror is related to cyborgs but still. Tanji getting split in half and Hugo being decapitated and Chiren's nightmarish fate. Nothing too violent but still, they pushed in as much as they could. Hopefully Fallen Angel gets us R + more cute Alita to balance things out.

Well not even just the violence, but some of the themes it presents, I'm surprised they were able to do. It may seem tame compared to most films, older especially, but in today's nonstop dripfit climate of safe comic book shit, I'm glad Alita stayed to it's source and didn't shy away from a lot of the questions it asks.

The entire film is really brilliantly pieced together, even on a twelve viewing, I was still just catching up on some minor set ups or pay offs, or even just subtextual explanations for some characters motivations, or parallels, i.e. Ido saving his daughter, Alita offering her heart to Hugo, both Alita and Hugo lose their bodies, even the same limbs, there's just so much to take away from every frame of the movie, anyone who says the script is muddled or messy is, I have to say, actually a fucking idiot.

I had never, ever touched the manga before seeing the film and I was able to follow it perfectly, I think it's way of world building is the best I've seen in a movie. They took the best approach, the fish out of water, and only certain information comes from certain people, so the sources make sense.

same boat as you. All I knew prior was that it was based off some manga I'd never heard of. Which didn't bother me as I'm unfamiliar with most manga/anime anyway. I kept up fine and idk how much credit to give to JC or RR but the pacing and sips of exposition definitely make it easy to digest. My mom and sister (who don't have the highest attention to detail) followed it just fine and even asked me about a couple things they weren't sure about. Those reviewers have absolutely no excuse.

RR kept the costs down. Honestly if JC handled it, it would've been double and might have actually not worked. He admitted this and RR said he made a JC movie for half the cost and half the time. late February I became suddenly violently sick. vomiting, diarrhea, constant unrelenting nausea. no energy. my mind couldn't focus on anything, it was like my thoughts shattered. I was overly hot for weeks, waking up over and over at night drenched in sweat. couldn't eat more than a few slices of cucumber or a few crackers at a time and even then I would get a stomach ache. on top of all that, I felt like I couldn't really breathe. every breathe was strangely difficult and I would wake up gasping and choking, feeling like I was not taking in enough oxygen. I felt like I was slowly being suffocated.
all of these symptoms happened day after day and they just wouldn't end. I began to feel deeply afraid that something was really, really wrong with my body. so, one day, desperate to just get my mind off things, I ended up going to see Alita. I've never heard of it or the manga before. I found myself being cheered up by this tough cyborg girl. it raised my morale. I even went back and watched it again. what else is there to do besides waiting and waiting for the doctor to become available and for your results to come back?
finally I got a call back. turns out I got really severe e coli poisoning and that that can last in your system for nearly a month. minimum amount I was actively, intensely sick for 22 days consecutively. by the time the doctor got back to me I was already slowly recovering. so I was able to beat it off without antibiotics. I had no idea something like that stayed in your system after you've vomited and shat out everything that's inside you. I've only ever heard of something like that lasting a week at most.
this is my first time in the Alita general... and I just wanted to share how the Alita kino impacted me.

I had a severe, abrupt illness that I've never had before. I've never been that sick before in my entire life nor have I been that sick that long, ever. I'm not saying Alita healed me, I'm saying Alita cheered me up and made me feel like maybe I could keep going even though I felt like I genuinely couldn't breathe, eat or sleep.
Anything that helped me during these weeks is very appreciated by me.
