That is how they see the world. They look at history and they say "wow, look at what we have achieved, look at how far we are along our journey to paradise". That's why the talk about fighting battles for causes, and why they care so much about protesting. History moves in a very simple way for them.

For them, society can never go backwards. They had a vision in their head of what society was going to look like after Obama; racism defeated, first woman president, open borders, love and hugs, no guns, just love. It fundamentally shocked them to their core, on a level that they can't even understand, to see Trump get elected, to see people vote for Brexit, to see people say no to refugees, etc. For them, this was just never supposed to happen.
