This one occurs in the middle of the first film.
The middle of the second film also contains an excellent still, one of my absolute faves. I think that Coppola knew he had a real winner with this one, so he painted a picture/took his photograph, and wanted everything placed perfectly. After all, the "still", as it plays out as a shot, hangs for several beats, without cutting (IIRC). You get at least a good five-mississippi of just looking at it, I know that much. "It insists upon itself", and is right in doing so. The muted sepia of some old flashbacked interior, its quiet, the off-center aesthetics of the composition juxtaposed with the lateral symmetry of the candlepieces about the door. A perfect bourgeois interior, infiltrated by two actors. The two figures dominating the composition in such close proximity to each other, the one never knowing what was on the other side of the door. The quiet of it all, communicated perfectly in a single image (the moment in the film is also quiet, and requires no sound to explain itself) which itself looks like a good representation of a genre painting of the period.
Notice how Clemenza's feet are in from the sort of object that they have come to steal. He himself, with his black coat which absorbs all light, both frames and is framed by the composition into which he has placed himself.
