Death Note is superstylized, completely unrealistic. Light is a caricature, a super-genius with too much pride in his intellect. The fact that anyone knew there was a killer at all is devastatingly bad for him and completely avoidable.

Genuinely though the show becomes very smart and logical and down to the wire, but L's task is so impossible that in the first few episodes they had to have Light make several massive, absolutely retarded mistakes that get L 99.99 percent of the way to solving the case. All of death note proper is about solving that remaining 0.001 percent from the point where Light started being reasonable.

To some extent you can justify Lights moronic actions as in-character hubris that helps demonstrate his megalomaniacal overconfidence(I think him going after the fake L on TV can be believably justified like that, particularly as it was such an impulsive move at a stage where he still felt untouchable), but using police data that narrows the investigation down onto a couple of hundred people is just ridiculous.
