It wasn't salvageable, there was nothing the marketers could do by the time Buzz started shitting on it and gave it the final nail in the coffin.

Buzz didn't even mention it once. No one aside from, sadly this time, conservative commentators who wanted to score some points without even researching the story and not being interested in the topic. Later some made articles about how wrong they were and how everybody has to quickly go and support the movie. In the end the movie made back its budget but barely and I'm not sure if it wasn't after home release.
Anyway boring subject these topics are only good when we ignore idiots trying to keep the controversy alive.
