Horror is a tiny, niche genre that's been basically dead for the longest time, that historically doesn't do that well in the box office since it only really appeals to a small selection of audience goers. Proclaiming yourself the "third best horror opening box office" is like giving yourself a pat on the back because you got the third best grade on a single spelling test in your "special" class out of like 10 other little speds. Good job, retard, but nobody really gives a fuck.

anything a black person do in america or europe is incredible, even the most pedestrian.
its only natural to get tired of this heavy fisted shit.
further, they racist as well, it looks like a nigger, doing a decent movie, with the help of a lot of whites, is something out of this world. respect should be treat these people as equals, not like retards who build a lego set, kinda.

Both Key and Peele are biracial. Both have white mothers and black fathers. Jordan Peele's dad left him when he was a kid, and he was raised by his single white mom. Key was put up for adoption, and adopted by an interracial couple.

Ian Lewis
Not particularly, no. "Oz The Great And Powerful" had a better box office opening (ranked 90 versus Us's rank of 115). Non-animated, non-capeshit. Also not a movie people hailed as a particular success or even as a good movie, I mean it's pretty much forgotten.
Keep in mind, I'm not saying Us is doing poorly. It's doing better than Get Out did, and is doing well for what they made. But throwing a bunch of made-up awards at its feet and acting like it's the second coming of Christ is ridiculous, and therefore I will ridicule.

The plot was like one of Shamalans scripts, but for a movie of his that would have normally bombed in the box office for being so nonsensical and dumb. The twist I saw coming from after the opening scene. It was well acted and there was some creativity in this, but it would have been more interesting if there was more of the underground world and less time on the drawn out section of the middle of the movie where we are forced to go through the same old slasher horror story beats. Haven't seen Get Out but if it's like this I'll probably never bother with that one.
Ethan Cruz
Yep. If anyone else had their name attached to this, it would have been a flop. Peele better hope his name lasts him a few more movies, because he sure as shit is out of good ideas.
Jason Hill
>Not him, but 70 mill for a movie what is not animated or capeshit, today is really a good opening
For horror that is huge. A successful horror move can open with $10mil or less. Horror traditionally makes more of its money on secondary markets (dvd & netflix) than they do in theatrical runs. Horror films also cost a fraction to make and market than a traditional forced blockbuster hype machine. The return on investment is enormous.
Gavin Cox
Why do Americans love the negroes so much

Probably because he's black

Us had a larger budget and larger release than typical horror movies.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Us. The social commentary is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of sociology most of the layers will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Peele’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his storytelling- his personal philosophy draws heavily from biblical literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these commentary, to realize that they're not just scary- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Us truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the commentary found in Us’ body swap plot twist which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Jordan Peele’s genius wit unfolds itself on the movie screen. What fools... how I pity them.
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Get Out tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then, they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothing personnel kid

You're being inconsistent and disingenuous. You compare it to other horror movies to talk about how great its box office is doing, but then turn around and compare it to blockbusters to say it had a low budget. Fact is Us is a high budget horror film that's making more money than horror films usually make but also costs more than horror films usually cost.
So hey, let's be fair and compare it to a horror film that had a similar budget: It (2017). $35m budget, $123m opening box office.

meritocracy isnt perfect but its the only way to have a system that offer individuals incentive to became better.

Mediocre horror/thriller movies make bank all the time though, and like it or not, it's far better than the average crap that gets put out in theaters.
At least "Us" tried to do develop its premise a bit over the course of the film, which is miles ahead of other recent home invasion movies like "the Purge."
I will say one thing to the credit of anons whining about black people though: If you replaced the black family with a white family, the movie (minus a couple of pop culture jokes) would be the exact same. They're the same bland horror movie family that you see in every stupid home invasion thriller.

Yes. It is riding on Jordan Peele's name. People are going to this expecting another Get Out. Honestly, Get Out was better because at least it had a point to it.
Ryan Ross
Its budget was on par with the nun. $20 mil is fucking nothing, a fraction of an adam Sandler shitshow.
Isaac Cruz
$20 million is a lot for a horror movie. Happy Death Day 2U had a $9 million budget, and that was considered big budget horror. Adam Sandler doesn't make horror movies.
Gabriel Morgan

Quit pretending like big studio movie budgets mean anything. It is just jew pedo money laundering. If you ignored unions and other bullshit, and just made a movie based on the actual cost of making the film, all of these budgets would be revealed as utter fraud.

Wyatt Moore
>other big budget horror had big budgets
Wow.
>Get Out was on the low end
No. Let's examine this, shall we? Get Out came out in 2017. What other horror films came out in 2017?
Don't Kill It. Budget: $1m
Prevenge. Budget: $104,000
XX. Budget: $2 million
Phoenix Forgotten. Budget: $2.8 million
Killing Ground. Budget: $920,000
It Comes At Night. Budget: $2.4–5 million
That's not to say that there weren't horror movies with bigger budgets, but $4.5 million isn't in any way exceptional. It's pretty well normal for a horror movie that doesn't have any kind of brand recognition behind it, from a guy who was previously known for making funny comedy skits. Horror movies in general just have no budget.
Ian Miller
It's not just poorly executed. It was a poor plan to begin with. In fact, it seems like they had no plan at all. I'd be forgiving of it if it had a good idea behind it, but there's no ideas behind it. I'd prefer they had made just a dumb home invasion movie, at least then there's a concept and idea, even if it's been played out and done before.
Luis Moore
You know it would have been way better if they threw out the twist and didn't bother trying to explain the doubles desu
Gabriel Perry
I think everyone agrees with this. The moment the explanation started I lost interest.
Granted, I was assuming we were getting a literal "shadow" of these people trying to kill the originals, which in itself would have been cliche, but making it a government experiment introduces so many plotholes that the movie now HAS to be a critique of social conventions because even an amateur can pick up on the many plot problems.
Kevin Powell
Better this than Captain Fungus. I saw it yesterday. It’s not amazing, but it’s decent.
Alexander Walker
Get Out also had a big advertising campaign that other horror movies don't have. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Get Out's advertising campaign was several times its production budget. Meanwhile, other horror films get no or minimal advertising, and what little budget they get actually gets put into making the movie.
Benjamin Wilson

He could have made the shadows a metaphor for the internet, for online anonymity, and it would have been a far, far better film. I didn’t hate it, just thought it could have been better.

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed it. I had a great time *with* it. It had decent acting and decent direction, but the story was really aggressively dogshit. They severely overhyped the fuck out of this movie. If my expectations hadn’t been so high, I wouldn’t be so critical of it.
Also, there’s way, way too much “Character does creepy thing because it’s creepy” going on this entire movie.
Luis Nelson

The tension evaporates five minutes after the doubles appear when it becomes clear no family member will get harmed.
The whites get shanked immediately. How many opportunities do the black doubles waste? Why go to these elaborate schemes like hunting the girl or drowning the dad in a body bag?
