Why is it that the Vietnam War produced such kino, but the Iraq or Afghanistan wars never did?
Why is it that the Vietnam War produced such kino, but the Iraq or Afghanistan wars never did?
because they're boring ass wars.
Because we're still waging war in the middle east and haven't left. Because auteurism isn't allowed anymore. Because it cost a lot of money to make war movies.
And there have been good Iraq war movies. The Hurt Locker, Syriana, etc. But they were made when the war was topical and there was potential financial gain from it.
While true in general there is Generation Kill for Iraq. There is also War Machine for Afghanistan, which is not kino but a decent enough flick, more focused on the political message than on the human side though.
because there were young talented directors at the time, there's no longer any talented directors. which is why cinema is going to die out, due to your stupid cape shit watching looking ass
>Because it cost a lot of money to make war movies.
This combined with the fact that capeshit is all the rage now. People want escapism not ugly reality. People are just fucking tiired of al these wars.
American Sniper
zero dark thirty was ok even though it's blatant propaganda.
everybody was on cocaine through the 70s and 80s. cocaine is a known confidence booster and lends itself to grandiose ideas both good for risk averse hollywood.
Vietnam was just way cooler.. It had the counter-culture, drugs, gook prostitutes, heroine smuggiling, jungle, crazy jungle commandos, phoenix program... just lots of cool interesting shit.
>implying they aren't still all on cocaine as well as worse things now
Conservatives are the new counter culture, lad.
Because Hollywood is run by Jews so they will only ever present Zionist propaganda. Just try to find a single movie that doesn't pretend muh terrorism is real and not and operation run by intelligence agencies.
Because the propaganda prevents portraying troops as anything other than literal gods. If you had even a single character have a flaw, then the media would jump down your throat calling you unamerican.
Ya but they fight in wars regardless. In Vietnam you had hippies being forced to fight in wars.
Over There was a decent show
Then again I haven’t seen it in over 10 years so I could be wrong.
because (((they))) won't allow us to admit the middle east wars were a mistake
>Vietnam War produced such kino
But they're all so boring.
Hi there fellow! Can't wait for the next Marvel movie, It's Endgame!!!! it's gonna be amazing!!!!!!
extremely good post. also add beast of war
The Vietnam war was depicted as something truly horrifying and cruel.
But since Israel still needs Americans to die for them in Iran, they can't portray the Iraq and Afghanistan wars as something negative. It must either be avoided entirely, or it must be about heroism, which promotes further bloodshed.
>Conservatives are the new counter culture, lad.
You poor dumb fuck.
On what planet?
The Vietnam War was symbolic of troubled times in US history, distrust of government, counter culture youth rebelling against the establishment, ended in defeat, jfk and Watergate etc. Whereas the middle east conflicts were never seen as a catalyst for zeitgeist shifts, rather it was the trauma of 911 that influenced the filmmakers of the era.
New Hollywood era of iconoclast auteurs vs the 2000s era of studio driven and PC Hollywood. There are no Kubrick, Cimino and Coppola anymore. People like Nolan dealt with 911 covertly through action movies because that's where the big budgets are nowadays. Meanwhile the 90s movie geeks like qt or pta have no interest in the present, they only circle jerk themselves with old movie references. Only Oscar boomers cared enough to address the topic directly and they made tedious boomer movies.
Because "it ain't me"
The planet where you can lose your job by insinuating that the desire to cut off your own penis may suggest a mental problem, or that maybe enforcing hormone blockers on children is child abuse
about every part of earth outside of america
The only kino Middle East movie is Jarhead. And even though it's from the very beginning of the US's conflict in the early '90s, it represents what is to come: corporate rape of the world, no good reason for war, the propaganda machine, the modern effects of war on our vets, American imperialism/domination of third world countries, etc...
Put all the arguments in this thread together and you get a pretty good approximation of why there are no Apocalypse Nows and Deer Hunters of the middle east wars. So this is a good thread by Yea Forums standards.
Personally I tend to think that it is more a market/cost problem then political intent, but that might play into it as well.
because one is a war and the other is clubbing baby seals
vietnam you had the draft and watergate and eventually evidence that the presidents had been prolonging the war purely for their own political agenda which combined to fundamentally alter america's trust in the government.
iraq and afghanistan was a bunch of ignorant motherfuckers that couldn't be bothered to read about the vietnam war and trusted the government like morons
