There is a tie-in comic that was produced in the early 00s.
John Doe had a super religions, very much abusive mother who beat him, isolated him from normal people, and pretty much made his life a living hell until he finally snapped and killed her upon finding out that she had murdered his father and lied to him, about how his father had abandoned the family.
He did his killing spree, because his mother's religiousness and hypocrisy and overall cruelty warped him into thinking the world was beyond salvation and that someone needed to put things right.
