is this really what being an employee looks like in corporate america?

In the more retard "hipster" companies, yes. This faggotry is everywhere.

I have never had a job so I wouldn't know

Dammit user, we can't splinter the fanbase. this is the /Theranos/ thread.

What the fuck is this and why is it being spammed on this board?

HBO released a documentary recently that explores Elizabeth Holmes, who was a super fucking weird creator of a scam company that managed to get people like Henry Kissinger and other major figures involved in the company. It was all based on lies.

I feel like it's the result of 90s cinema/media romanticizing how soul-crushing it was to work for a corporation as a cog in a much larger machine. In an attempt to distance themselves from this stigma, the younger CEOs and managers are getting rid of desk dividers, opting for a more open work environment where interaction among employees is encouraged. They'll even go so far as to get rid of desks entirely and replace it with open spaces where there aren't any assigned seats. They try to make people feel like humans by getting them to do flash mobs or songs about the company's culture because they unironically think that their employees are stupid enough to be influenced into thinking of their job as 'home' or 'family'. It works for some people, as you can in the op. I find this forced devotion to corporate culture and participation in non-work like events to be even more dehumanizing than 90s work environments

@111888392
a documentary about her and her company recently came out on HBO capeshitter

I’ve only ever worked in small tech companies, depending on the profile of the product and the amount of funding, this bullshit and brainwashing happens constantly. Silicon Valley’s depiction is more reality than you’d think

yeah but it doesn't have the webm in op so this is clearly the superior thread
i never thought i'd miss dividers as much as i do

Nah, it's based on studies and science.

But those generally are meant for the average worker. I would hate open work environment and am glad I have an office.

>that fucking high powered attorney formerly on Clinton's staff
>making a fool of herself clapping and dancing into the room
It's like Holmes managed to draw everyone in with her googly eyes and hypnotize them into retardation.

This boomer knew. Poor fucker.

Like you said, she's the new captain marvel which means multiple threads about her are permissible

>be bridge engineer
>only get paid when working on bridges
>be software engineer
>get paid 24/7 via sales/ads on shitty app with nearly no upfront costs.
Will the government implement a special tax on tech faggots before they completely drive everybody else homeless?

Because the bay area should be nuked.

Open office plans exist because it makes it easier to watch every employee. It's some panopticon shit.

even Stanford Chem Eng professor fell for her fucking shit, how pathetic

Attached: clarence.jpg (702x441, 33K)

James Mattis fell for her shit too. She duped loads of intelligent and powerful people, it's hilarious actually.

what kind of sex do you think she had with the pajeet?

Simply put, they're trying to force the natural sense of community into the soulless corporate work.
>I find this forced devotion to corporate culture and participation in non-work like events to be even more dehumanizing than 90s work environments.
Well put, at least they weren't pretending back then.

Just watch Silicon Valley on HBO, it’s scary accurate

Bondage

Scat what else? Bare minimum she showed bob and vagine.

You should see the daily cheer squads at amazon.

It can't be that hard to doop a lot of pajeets into writing code for free by getting a bunch of western sluts to show tits for next to nothing. I mean it's not bad business model per say.

They do that at Wal-mart too

Agreed, but I also think that some people are really fulfilled embracing this soulless corporate fake culture precisely because they are empty themselves to begin with.
It also can fill up a personal void is what I mean. It's a two way road I guess, and both parties are somewhat guilty.

WE ARE WE ARE

That shit's been going on for a century, probably more.
I've done mindless factory, construction and farm work and neither is that bad at all, unless you're purposefully trying to make yourself feel miserable like a neurotic cunt.

i work at wally world and we don't do it thank god

Open work spaces are 1000% worse. It's not fun to spend 10 hours a day being looked at or watched by faggots and roasties while you want to work.

why is she simultaneously a 3/10 and an 8/10?

imagine the smell

They also paid several thousand dollars to a bunch of diverse retards in the HR business to come up with this shit. And the US government pays for people to also do this motivational bullshit song and dance. If people really aren't motivated by money they should be at home or homeless.

>DANCE WAGIE! DANCE!
Why is this trope so common in America?

Was that better?

How would any of us know?

The US is the most car obsessed country ever, your post doesn't even make sense. Some people do walk though, especially if they live close to work and aren't a disgusting fatass like yourself.

It's not the back of a Burger King, so none of us would know.

I work for Lyft, Inc. I can fucking confirm this is EXACTLY what working in a trendy tech company is like. That, and the absolute insane amount of shit they pull while smiling at your face. It's literally full of either sociopaths, or people brainwashed by said sociopaths.

Ask me anything.

How much money from lyft goes to paying off state and federal governments to ignore all their bullshit?
Has anyone talked about unionizing the lyft drivers?

>on-site interview at biotech company in ca
>show up in black suit/red tie
>waiting in lobby, see employees walk in to work
>they're dressed really casual
>ok business casual is normal, it's biotech not wall street
>see employees wearing cargo pants
>wtf
>some hr drone picks me up, starts talking about the company
>mentions shit like the on-site juice bar and gym
>wtf who cares
>tells me it's casual because today is the big company kickball tournament
>wtf who cares
>interviews consist of one/two people at a time coming into room and asking questions
>actually somewhat technical
>4 hours of this shit
>i feel pretty good, definitely held my own
>don't hear from them until i call and ask what happened
>"we were really impressed with your technical skills, however..."
i can definitely see how they hired someone like Holmes or pajeet instead of me

women and bitch brained faggots run the show now. you white boys failed about as hard as you could possibly fail

>How much money from lyft goes to paying off state and federal governments to ignore all their bullshit?

About as much you would expect; or they cut behind the corner deals like free Lyft rides for life for all City Officials.

>Has anyone talked about unionizing the lyft drivers?

It will never happen. Drivers are IC's get over it. Also drivers aren't even going to be a priority in the next year. We are going to be heavily expanding into other territories.

Actual employees of the company have recently started talking about unionizing though after they fucked everyone over on the IPO.

Nothing feels more soul crushing than not having a dedicated space for yourself while you work. Unassigned, completely open seating and no privacy is cancer.

What you need is cubicles and lots of cooperative work spaces. Lots of meeting rooms too.

at P&G you had your own desk in an open floor plan but lots of people worked at different sites so you could spend some days in a collab space or 'huddle room' as they were called
they constantly reassigned R&D people so i don't know how anything got made but they sell Tide and Pampers so what the fuck

yes, and that's precisely why i'm unemployed

IDK I just know that doing Sys admin work would be mind numbing torture if I couldn't watch YouTube for 2-3 hours a day and eat my one hour lunch in isolation.

aye, open space is fucking cringe
thankfully I can put on my headphones and doze off

Public Transportation (as in City Partnerships), AI, Alternative Transportation (more scooters because they are profitable as fuck as it turns out) and Other technologies that don't involve transportation.

Lyft is going to be a brand soon.

Oh yeah if you show up to one of those companies for an interview in a suit an tie you are insta-shitcanned for (((cultural fit))) reasons

It's the tech equivalent of showing up for a wall street interview in shorts and a wifebeater

>PhD defense this July
>everyone's telling me to go 2 years postdoc, 2 years adjunct, 5 years tenure track before my career "really" starts
>or I could sell out and work industry and start at +100k plus benefits to sit around and laugh at tech startups' jokes

wat do

there's a massive amount of people who are so lonely and empty in their lives that they fall for this "family" shit at jobs even shittier than you could imagine.
Wal-Mart makes their employees do songs in the morning sometimes.

>dance wagie, dance
>good, good boy.
>Now sing wagie, sing for me
>Very good!

I was rejected from Ivy school in both undergrad and grad. My scores were in the top 2% of the country. And they let her in. What does she have that I don't?

Had sex.

two words: flying cars

theverge.com/2018/7/19/17586878/larry-page-flying-car-opener-kitty-hawk-cora

lyft is playing catch up if they decide to give it a try

>CA
Get out of that state right now. At least the East Coast still maintains the dress code. CA corporations are more like hipster communes than real corporations.

tons of extracurriculars and/or underrepresented minority status

Dont feel bad, you can get the same education at any state school

We're not doing flying cars.

her family is very wealthy and distinctly jewish

This so true. West coast has very low standards.
> never wear t-shirts. Always untucked dress shirts over jeans & sneakers.
> get called dapper

it's worse than that, it makes the workforce sort of self-policing. since the employees usually aren't that tight-knit to all go in on slacking, everyone feels pressured to not look like the lazy fucker lest Susan or Carol report you to management

I have an interview next week and the recruiter said on the phone it’s relaxed and casual - It’s sad that I’m more worried about the perception if I turn up in business casual and they are sitting there in bootcut jeans and a polo.
Fuck tech companies

Wow this is uncanny

Will henceforth refer to her as a post cancer ebert lookin ass bitch

>EC
This is the most bullshit criteria. You can't pad your academic potential by cooking soup for homeless or speak at some trendy event.

>same education at any state school
Undergrad maybe but not grad.

If they actually think worse of you at your interview because of you dressing too nicely then you don't want to work there. You might be desperate for a job but remember where ever you work at you'll most likely spend more time there on average than you do at home.

the reason why these top schools and jobs higher people with higher extracurriculars and interesting hobbies is because of how competitive the environment is. they want people that have outlets for stress. they want athletes/creatives/volunteers etc. because they know that when shit gets tough at school/work they have things to do where they can blow off that pent up steam/frustration. people without these things on their resume are a liability, they don't want someone that can't release stress outside of the workplace. you might be the smartest person in your class but if all you do is study and work then it's going to reach a point where you'll do something crazy at school/work and they don't want that.

they'll pretend they favor outgoing extracurricular types because they'll 'give back to the community' but it's a front for the truth. next time you apply for a reach school or a tough job make sure to mention you played football in high school or volunteer at a homeless shelter

Lyft is fundamentally unprofitable. Will never make money, unless they completely change their business model, or replace all their drivers with robots (really cheap ones).

How do I meat a girl like Lizzie Holmes?

I worked six weeks in corporate America at one of these "fun" offices and couldn't take it. honestly, OP's video would be considered a good day. everyone is so terrified of looking like they aren't buying-in that there is this insane loop of crazy behavior.

>boss does something retarded like a dance party on a wednesday afternoon
>everyone fakes enjoying out of fear
>boss thinks "that went great! they all enjoyed it!"
>schedules a dance competition the next week

and it goes on and on forever.

I wound up becoming a pilot and moving to New Zealand, $150k degree totally wasted

>come into a casual hippie biotech lookin like a square corporate drone
>obviously didnt do his research on what the company is about
>doesnt get hired as it shows lack of forward thinking
>LIBRULS SUCK ABLOO BLOO

She's kinda right. Even if you have more skills than the next guy you won't be hired if you act like a shy sperg

Fuck that. I'd rather be a pilot even if it paid much less.

Thank god I'm a carpenter who works on his own.

she looks like she fucks indian men

so what are your ideas for fixing corporate america? just reverting back to the old system like in this pic ?

well if you're like me you won't get the dream job at Exxon and you'll be forced to do an academic postdoc which will basically set your career back because nobody gives a fuck about the shit you're doing (literally zero citations on one paper), then an industry postdoc, then a natty lab position which is basically a third postdoc but at least making decent money
or just be a woman/pajeet and go 1/1 on job interviews

the thing i'm most bitter about is how shit my phd advisor was with career advice, he didnt know/care how to get an industry position and lots of the work i did never got published because he was a lazy fuck but wouldn't let me publish on my own

i knew the company and its tech, asked questions about their competitors, pros/cons but you're right they want forward thinkers like OP

Attached: 1546315667536.jpg (720x888, 334K)

>recruiter said on the phone it’s relaxed and casual

It probably is - FOR THEM

YOU need to show up in smart casual, so like the tech bro combo of:
>blue shirt
>khaki chinos
>brown brogues

or something will be totally fine, not too formal, but formal enough that they take you seriously.

They will absolutely be interviewing you in tshirt and shorts or some shit - you want to balance it so you look professional but not a fish out of water

>boss does something retarded like a dance party on a wednesday afternoon

LinkedIn unironically do this to their new hires as I understand

>not too formal
how do you know when a suit is too formal, is that just automatic in california?

> higher extracurriculars and interesting hobbies is because of how competitive the environment is
How do these things relate to each others? People with hobbies are the ones who are less focus on their jobs. Look at all the snowflakes that come out of Ivy these days. They will cry and breakdown at anything. Remember election night? The moment things don't go their ways they throw a tantrum. I play vidya against subhumans daily and the stress I handle in one day are more than they will ever experience

when your Theranos material, you just KNOW

The last 3 places I've worked moved from offices/cubicles to an open landscape office, and every single fucking person I talked to in the company absolutely fucking despised it. Even the most social people in the company fucking hated it.

Every single time, the general atmosphere in the company went from being good to absolute shit. When there were offices and cubicles, people could actually talk with one another without disturbing 20 people who were trying to concentrate. With the open landscape bullshit, if you need to communicate with one person, you either have to drag them out of the room or end up disturbing the entire office.

Attached: 1516224497718.png (600x598, 293K)

>high prestige
>stressful but fun
>travel

you could be forgiven five or so years ago for wanting to forgo a career in trucking, railroads or aviation because of the looming threat of automation. but in the last eighteen months it become apparent the capabilities of these technologies was way overstated and we are probably a few decades, and not a few years, away from driver/pilot-less anything.

skilled jobs where you operate equipment to me are the best way to go. no office environment, you get to play with some big machines, get outside, feel the sun...now that its clear these jobs are here to stay for some time there's no downside.

they don't, that how you get OP type shit, it's all a dog and pony show with no substance behind it

When people at an office says casual, pic related is what they're thinking. Except the black skin.

Attached: 40556798.jpg (236x354, 21K)

they don't want people with nothing to turn to when they inevitably get fired due to automation or downsizing

i have a theory that the managers who implement these open spaces know that their workers hate it. they do it because it keeps people on their toes. they're forced to not kill time on sites like reddit and buzzfeed out of fear of being judged by their co-workers for slacking

I've been thinking the same, but productivity doesn't go up. People are fucking miserable, and the best talent ends up leaving the company in droves since the atmosphere becomes so shit.

of course! the higher ups commission some bullshit study from a university they donate tens of millions to just confirm what they want to hear and then present it as evidence to the proles that "you are happier now! look at how happy you are! this study proves you are happy!"

it really doesn't matter because the automation everyone thought was coming the destroy the blue collar world is quickly changing course and now targeting the army of useless office workers who surf social media all day on the clock.

There is more value in virginity than than promiscuity. Being a virgin means that you can control your urges and desires to focus on your career. It is a symbol of dedication, self-control and strong will-power. There are reasons why the church values virginity of their monks and nuns.

this is what happens when women are allowed positions of power in the workplace

Shit like this, the lunch rooms being designed as prison cafeterias and Walmart taking out life insurance policies on their employees only enhances my belief that Walmart is actually trying to make their employees commit suicide as a way to generate pure profit.

The stores themselves are horrible but Wal Mart treats their skilled employees extremely well and are constantly rated as a great employer if you aren't some bottom barrel wagie.

Probably why he died, his heart couldnt handle the additional strain anymore.

>Nah, it's based on studies and science.

Completely bankrupt studies and science

damn near every suggested workplace design trend that came out of 90's research and resulted in modern tech companies has now been reversed or contradicted by better-designed studies.

probably gets it the most right.

Even the much praised policies of Google, such as the "20% time to personal projects" are really
unabashed ways to nullify the very few IP/Shop right protections employees have under existing systems. truly fucking disgusting.

>please god let me win the lottery

I'm talking about the bottom barrel wagies working the register and stocking shelves who are easily replaced. With the whole life insurance on employees thing becoming public, I genuinely believe that corporate has decided that pushing the depressed wagies towards suicide is good for business. Why wouldn't they? When they can squeeze $90,000 out of the insurance company and have the dead slave replaced by noon the next day.

what skilled employees does walmart have

>the automation everyone thought was coming the destroy the blue collar world is quickly changing course and now targeting the army of useless office workers
this user knows what's up. i work in industry in the US and shit is, to a certain degree, booming in my sector/region. the thing is: we make things, things people need to have a functioning society. many 'services' can be automated very easily. even highly automated plants, like where I work, require a good deal of operators and support people (maintenance, engineers, quality personnel). the day all those managers and paper pushers are obsolete will be a good day for those of us who make shit.

I want her to give me a handjob without ever breaking eye contact or blinking.

It's a giant corporation. Not everyone works a register or stocks shelves.

I work in a small corporation and it's pretty cringey. I fucking hate all the corporate lingo, culture bullshit. I am just there to do boring bullshit well and get paid a wage.

wal mart is probably the best large trucking company in the USA to work for

that makes sense
you mean the people who work in corporate? then yeah they probably get treated alright

I really....really...REALLY do not understand how this whole thing happened.

I get it, yeah, with charisma you can compensate for basically anything and convince all manner of people that you know what you're doing. But this bitch was a black hole of charisma. She was straight up unsettling with every aspect of her appearance, from that fucked up voice to her insane eyes and homeless lady hair.

Like how didn't Henry goddamn Kissinger look at her, listen to her ramble about MUH WORLD CHANGING TECH and immediately see through her bullshit? Fuck man, I'd have a hard time loaning this weirdo $15 let alone BILLIONS.

HOW did so many "intelligent" professionals get duped SO hard? Was she blowing them on the side or something? I really don't get it.

Any job where you are physical is nothing like a job where you have to sit at a desk all day. It's horrible to be tied to a desk when you're healthy.

most office jobs are just moving data around and AGI in its current state is actually much more adept at solving those problems than maneuvering having equipment or performing complicate tasks in the physical world.

it just makes the most sense. the radar and sensors blue collar automation requires are just more degrees of complication and things that break, AGI within a network is comfortably in its own world. the fact that we were even pushed a "NO MORE BLUE COLLAR WORLD" meme in the first place by the media is highly suspicious.

>more scooters
No, fuck off with those things. People leave them all over the street in hordes, and it makes going anywhere or doing anything a complete bitch with these fucking eyesores in the way.

It comes from never been told "no" in their entire life and trying to be as intense as possible with what nature has given them.

That really depends on your definition of doing well.

not really

The point is that people stocking shelves and working the register at Walmart are obviously already at a low point in their lives. When everything in their workplace seems to be designed to only enhance their depression, and their employer has a $90k life insurance policy on them, you have to wonder why that is.

this lady stole millions if not billions and probably put a lot people at risk for giving out false blood reports. she's out right now in a luxury apartment banging some hotel mogul. meanwhile some dude who swipes a $10 roasted chicken is in jail for 20 years

an idea that could potentially disrupt the entire medical industry helmed by a stronk independent woman (regardless of how weird she was, which i believe helped her image as a 'genius') is prone to dupe anyone that throws their money at people like her day in and day out

these investors literally shell out millions a year to ideas llike these, most of them end up as failures but the few that succeed more than cover the cost of the failures

I'm glad I work in a smaller engineering company, there's no time for this bullshit

>The point is that people stocking shelves and working the register at Walmart are obviously already at a low point in their lives.
An assumption, an erroneous one, and might I point out we're all posting on Yea Forums right now?

>When everything in their workplace seems to be designed to only enhance their depression, and their employer has a $90k life insurance policy on them, you have to wonder why that is.
I have no problem working for Walmart. I did work for them for about 1.5 years. I got ill and tendered my resignation when I was laid up for 2 weeks. It was a low wage but more than enough to live anywhere that isn't a liberal enclave. More importantly it was easy fun work with plenty of time to socialize.

none of the investors were in the medical field
they are all old as hell too. i don't care how smart you used to be your mind goes when you start pushing 80+
the person that hooked her up with the meetings with these people vouched for her

All of those companies were started by East Coasters though. What did you mean by this?

Pretty good post. I work at a non-profit and this shit tends to be shoved down our throats. Meditation sessions, dance classes, and birthday parties are all scheduled for our staff. Barely anyone participates if attendance is not mandatory but the retards continue to demand it. Our generation sold ourselves on the idea that the office work place can be a place of community and belonging.

An assumption based on the fact that +75% of the people I've ever encountered stocking shelves or working the register in a Walmart appeared to be about one bad day away from blowing their fucking brains out.

Young people who have other options later on aren't part of the above demographic. The people who have no other options than to remain a Walmart slave for life, are.

>forced devotion to corporate culture and participation in non-work like events
The absolute worst.
I'm quiet as fuck but still have meet cool coworkers I grab beers with once in a while but I'd fucking despise ever being forced to do something social at work instead of actually getting my job done.

all these corporations need to do is cut the hours of work by 1/3. that's literally it. no need to spend huge sums of money on keeping morale high by making people feel like family. literally just give people more time to live their own lives. people would much rather meditate/dance on their own accord during their newfound free time AWAY from work. why is it so hard for these places to realize that no one wants to mediate with susan from HR or bob from accounting?

>hurrr x% of people ME encountered are sad durrr its a bad job urk

Maybe you just have a beef with Walmart and are automatically projecting your assumption people are in a bad spot. Or, SURPRISE, most people in the bottom economic strata don't have their shit together. That doesn't mean everyone doesn't, and it had nothing to do with employers. PEOPLE are responsible for THEMSELVES. And employer is responsible for paying you for hours worked. Pretending Walmart is the problem is not only ridiculous, it does a disservice to everyone, especially the people who don't work at Walmart and are way more fucked up than the average Walmart worker.

>slave
you can't quit being a slave, dumbass.

Cutting the workday by a third because some faggy startups push this meme shit is a hilariously stupid idea. Productivity would plummet in the western world.

>lol just give everyone 1/3 less work
what about the people that are paid hourly? you're fucking them. also what do you think time is? time is money asshole. if you are slashing the workday by a third you are REDUCING COMPANY PROFITS BY AT LEAST 33%.

Truly psychotic

Dude look at her board of directors. There is not a single health care professionals. None of her funds come from medical field investment firms and Theranos is tagged as high risk investment. Henry Kissinger is probably as good as a hobo in regard to medical devices

i meant for salary based jobs where only half the day is spent doing concrete productive work (if even that much)

>if you are slashing the workday by a third you are REDUCING COMPANY PROFITS BY AT LEAST 33%.
Not the guy you're responding to and I agree with your first point, but you're reducing company expenditures by the cost of that time. Also there are limits to worker productivity, and many workers in offices spend more than enough time goofing off or spacing out that they might actually be improving productivity (and thus, their worth to the company) with more time off

Truly horrifying stuff. I'd unironically rather be a serf in the middle ages than live this way for 60 years straight

It's stuff like this that makes me feel better about being homeless.

Just assuming every minute of the day is spent equally (so no assumptions of when productivity is highest, when demand is highest, etc), reducing the workday by a third will reduce wages and profits by a third. Every company can stand to optimize but the best way to do that is not always obvious. Reducing work by 1/3 across the board will wreck havoc, and is also unnecessary. No one is forced to work a salaried position. Don't be an idiot and exempt yourself from labor laws if it bothers you to work 60 hours a week.

This idea that because some people get worked to the bone by their employer, that there oughtta be a law, is so laughable. People decide to work their ass off. Who are you to tell them otherwise?

YES. Its fucking horrific. Every single owner of a company in corporate america has the same psychopath eyes. They make you do these things they think humans would enjoy. Hence, the webm...

cosy as shit. You just sit there with coffee and biscuits while people sort out all the problems they're having.

There were a few studies in my country in which they tried to reduce the work-week from 5 days/40 hours to 4 days/32 hours, and see how it would impact productivity of general operations. These were obviously offices and not manufacturing or other jobs where it is a physical impossibility to improve productivity.

The study showed that the vast majority of workers increased their productivity during the 4 days due to having an additional day of rest, and the overall result was that their completed workloads was actually greater during the 4-day work week, than it was during the 5-day work week.

Again, it obviously won't work in every environment, but it can work for some.

the point was originally made about salaried employees that dont get paid overtime. obviously they're retarded for not working for wages or comissions but that's an entirely separate argument that i didn't make

>Alright, I want to hear from everyone. Why don't you chime in, user? You are the only one who haven't talked

Attacking employers for doing this is pretty silly though. A salary is tempting to people for obvious reasons. It's guaranteed income. But no one is forced to do anything. It's a system of voluntary exchange, where people agree to trade their time and labor for money.

To assume you know better than these people how they should spend their money is ludicrous and paternalistic to the highest degree. No one thinks Walmart is a glamorous job. But for many people it is the first step to employment, and to others it's easy cash while they do whatever they want (me). And for some it's a job while they ruin their lives.

spend their time*

because working for a wage is trading, essentially. time for money.

>Her father, Christian Rasmus Holmes IV, was a vice president at Enron

>salaried employees that dont get paid overtime

Salaried employees in burgerland aren't automatically eligible for overtime? What the fuck? Don't the contracts for salaried employees state that they will earn X amount of money for Y amount of hours worked?

Do they just work for free if their boss asks? What the fuck is this cuck shit?

>reducing the workday by a third will reduce... profits by a third
I never said there ought to be a law, I'm arguing that companies should be doing this themselves so they can minimize the time where workers are inhabiting the building without doing any work

How would you make an office job less soul crushing?

>more breaks
>more vacation days
>gift vouchers every now and then (different from just a cash bonus, making people shop for something is better than just straight up money sometimes)
>4 work days instead of 5

Whoops, forgot to add that companies will be able to identify where these productivity and profitability gaps are and adjust accordingly. If your restaurant doesn't get any customers before noon, it makes perfect sense to open at noon. Otherwise you have employees running machines and generally increasing costs with no return for a few hours. Why not cut those hours?

I think it's amusing you think reducing the work day by 1/3 will automatically make the workforce more productive by a commensurate amount.

Maybe a short work day will encourage people to slack off more. If I only have to put in 5.5 hours, I wonder how many of those .1 I can shave off taking an extra long shit?

I'm with you. From my position I think we will move towards a new kind of economy where the only jobs are related more directly with production while transistors do all the busy work for us. All the haughty office types are in for some pain in the next dozen or so years. Can't wait.

yes. there are companies that set up a business model where the average work week is 80 hours and people, straight out of college, will sign up for it and slave away for two years. bonus is a $150 amex card if you exceed what's expected of you.

these companies look so good on resume's that people willingly do this to themselves for a few years so they can get a better job. turnover for these corporations are so high for the lower staff level/junior analyst positions because they're churning these kids out of college every year paying them a base salary for insane hours.

youtube.com/watch?v=pIXAmjUFSso

You think this is a trivial problem, but people have been writing up work schedules for centuries and still can't perfect it. That's because human behavior has a degree of unpredictability to it.

Here's the setup at my current office job:

>Can take breaks whenever the fuck I'd like. Often take 30 minute shitbreaks to browse Yea Forums. Lunch break is 45 minutes (paid)
>Since lunch break is 45 minutes, actual workday is 7 hours and 15 minutes
>25 paid vacation days. Can take as many unpaid vacation days as I want, as long as manager approves and it doesn't affect general operations
>Mandatory office hours are 10am-2pm. Meaning I can start working at 6am and go home at 2pm, or start working at 10am and go home at 6pm. Whatever fits my sleep schedule
>Ability to work from home on fridays
>If I receive a work-related call after-hours, I am eligible for 1 hour of overtime pay, regardless of how long the call lasted
>Ability to work overtime on weekends (on request). Weekend overtime pays 3x the normal daily salary. Meaning if I want to work both Saturday and Sunday, I'll net an extra $1.5k in my monthly salary

Same applies to every employee in the building, and most people are satisfied. I'm not in burgerland, though.

This is not the guy you were responding to, but I am. I do not think ALL service jobs will be automated but that such jobs will overall be more effected my automation than factories. I don't know much about how call centers will play out but I know I hate when I get a human-sounding machine when I call any sort or help line. Maybe they will get better.

>>gift vouchers every now and then (different from just a cash bonus, making people shop for something is better than just straight up money sometimes)
Fuck off. Gift vouchers are shit and I would much rather just get a cash bonus. You never end up using all the money on a gift voucher anyway.

Because they didn't. Theranos was a front company for shady government shit that they threw under the bus when a journalist started sniffing around.

>There's too much vague and human stuff in it.
i feel like you're not even aware of the kind of progress machines are making. i don't mean the kind that gets publicized in the news, i mean the REAL progress that won't be uncovered for years due to tech corporations wanting to drip these 'developments' inch by inch every year so they can reap the most amount of profits.

apple can make hologram laptops. they're hiding their powerlevel not because they don't have the tech to do it, but because making miniscule changes to each device for years on end is infinitely more profitable than putting everything they have on the table for the next release.

point is the average person has no idea how far AI REALLy is

you cannot reason with retarded boomers. They're angry about wasting their lives for lying bosses and the idea of other people avoiding that same fate terrifies them.

>the only part of law thats off the hook is litigation
Do you realize where litigation takes place?

>I know I hate when I get a human-sounding machine when I call any sort or help line.
Exactly. I don't think it's ever going to get to the point where it's totally convincing. I'm almost a robot on the phone; I pretty much just stick to the call flow and rarely bother to socialize with people. It's an inbound call center so I can no incentive to build rapport. It's more about volume than anything, but I still get conversion from people who don't want to deal with a computer system.

Humans are very good at picking out fakes and imposters. It's hardwired into our biology to spot deception in social interaction. As long as we are human, and interact with humans, humans will be at the forefront of customer service. Even deepfakes require a human narrator. In 100 years maybe it will pass the Pepsi challenge.

Open offices provably lower productivity

>You think this is a trivial problem
Again, stop putting words in my mouth. This is a huge problem, you have people spending large amounts of their limited time on this earth sitting in jobs but not actually working. Cut the dead space and everybody is happier (provided there's a reasonable wage/salary increase). The worker gets more time off, the employer gets to cut costs for the time not used productively.

I'm 23 and have never had a job. The thought of going into soul-crushing wageslave retail work or becoming a corporate drone fills me with the bleakest despair and makes me want to kill myself. What am I going to do, bros? How am I going to avoid the rat race?

>Again, stop putting words in my mouth. This is a huge problem

>Whoops, forgot to add that companies will be able to identify where these productivity and profitability gaps are and adjust accordingly.
>Why not cut those hours?
It's not that simple. That's why. Though AI is already doing a better job of scheduling people than people do. But even the best AI cannot predict human behavior. Any job that involves interacting with an unpredictable human element will have unpredictable demands, and require flexibility and readiness in scheduling. The easiest way to stay ready it to stay staffed.

It's not that bad. Just imagine being homeless where rape is a currency.

This is unironically how i'm dressed for work today

Are you a shut-in?

You could always do some dumb shit like become a park ranger, swimming instructor, garbage man, etc. Thousands of options.

Are you good at art?

So say you're an employer and you've figured out that in the last 3 years of business, not one dollar has been earned after 2:00 PM. However, between 2:00 and 5:00 you still have people in the office, using computers, using the phones, requiring the building be kept cool, keeping the lights on, etc. Do you think it would be okay to say "Everyone can go home at 2:00?"

I got a two year degree to become an electronics technician and I fix machines in a factory. I love my job. I read a lot when things aren't breaking, when things do break it is like being a detective to discern the cause and fix and I mostly joke with my similarly blue collar coworkers. This is an option for you.

You're making fun of NEETs who browse these boards. But most of the posters are just 12, not maladjusted.

Fuck Noogles

Attached: noogles.jpg (585x300, 71K)

I'd rather not hang around with blue collar proles.

I am sure the employer has a good reason to keep people working, if for no other reason than it keeps those people on the clock, assuming they are working for a wage. Or the employer is a fool, which is entirely possible, but really that's the employer's prerogative to be foolish.

At least you are allowed to leech. My dad is also loaded but I have to work or get disowned.

Then become a park ranger. You get to chase hobos out of your territory.

My point is, obviously in your example it would be ok to let people go. but it's such a cherry-picked example it does not deserve serious consideration. You do not know what employers know. Assume they know more than you.

It depends on the office.

I'm in the UK and work in an open plan office. My team is all a similar age and we all get along well. We often meet up outside of work, go for afterwork activities, and i've even been on lads holidays with most of them. We're genuine friends and so being in an open plan environment with them is actually very enjoyable.

Fair enough but they at least don't talk like faggots, can take a joke and are capable of completing useful tasks with their hands.

>Park ranger
Have you read Missing 411 user? Those woods aren't as peaceful as you think

I just don't know what I'm going to do, man. I'm so scared. I only have one friend and I haven't spoken to him in five years.

I'm about to go to sleep and wake up in 6.5 hours for work.

No one else would ever think to come here.

Same reason we got INTJ and INTP crawling everywhere. Modern society is death.

This is a different guy. I wouldn't mind that kind of job if, as you say, it doesn't sand down your soul, gives you some free time, and your coworkers are okay (I don't really fit in with the hypernormie liberal Silicon Valley types). The problem is I'm just too dumb for engineering or anything related to it.

You won't be working for long, eventually your life will fall apart. The capitalist will have made a lot off you.

You realise that working salaried just guarantees money for that time worked? You don't automatically get overtime anywhere. That's entirely company policy.

They mention it in the documentary, it was for FDA approval for a single, rarely used blood test on their edison machine, which is essentially meaningless when they offer over 200, the vast majority of which werent being done on those machines. It was like winning the tiniest battle but partying like you won the war.

What ever happened to the Gen X attitude? Holy fuck

work for a govt lab. you'll make less than industry but it's worth it

>You realise
>You don't automatically get overtime anywhere

No, I didn't realise that, which was why I asked the question to begin with. In my country, if your salary is for 40 hours of work and you are made to work 41 hours, you are by law eligible for overtime pay. Employers can't force employees to work for free here.

When I finished my masters and thought about doing a PhD, I asked around and only heard horror stories.

Gen X are literally turning into boomers as they're all turning 50

this reminds me of bitconnect looololl

p.s. go for a fucking DoD lab. you will never have to deal with the type of faggotry you're seeing ITT. when we have our "all hands" type meetings they start with the fucking national anthem

doing a PhD is great if you have the right advisor

Yes very funny haha it's just so silly giving people their fucking freedom.

I'm not broken just because I don't have a job. I also don't have any crazy political views, don't have any mental illness, no autism, not antisocial, have a normal height and weight, good hygiene, don't do drugs, don't have trouble conversing, don't watch anime (this is a big one), and am just a regular albeit slightly dumb guy. I dropped out of college because I didn't fit in and it was making me miserable. The reason I don't have any friends is because I don't really get opportunities to make any as I'm not in school or work. I don't think people here are as one-dimensional as you make them out to be.

>The problem is I'm just too dumb for engineering or anything related to it.
That doesn't stop some of the people I work with! The electronics program I was in was somewhat grueling, I guess, but if you are dedicated and understand how algebra works its not too bad. The main thing is to have an interest in it. I got into electronics because I was fascinated by how guitar amps work so I had a Why. If you have Why, you can deal with any How.

None of this is to say my job is cake. It can be exhausting and occasionally mind numbing. Some days are fucked up something awful and nothing wants to run correctly. Moving big electric motors and separating parts that are bound together with fine rust dust and such can be a bitch. Tracing down bits in a byzantine program some French nigger (I work for France's finest tire manufacturer) wrote can be obnoxious. But over all I really like what I do and maybe you would too. The point is there is all kinds of shit out there and, like you, I could never sit at a desk shifting information around while pretending to care about football/whatever with the guy at the desk next to me.

Fuck this. I'm opting out.

It all depends your relationship with him tho
If you're a no good who never done anything with your life, then yeah
You could take a new degree and take care of other people's investments until your father is comfort in letting you take care of his money
I have a friend who has an economics bachelor and he's become an investment advisor
You could study and try to get a CEA and aim for a CFA which is p hard to get but once you have it you'll surely have other people's trust on your knowledge
If your father is really 1% i'm sure he has connections
