I honestly have never gotten why everyone gets upset about this episode? It's very tongue in cheek and they even say something like "We'll never speak of it again" at the end to spoof on how ridiculous the whole thing is. It had some good jokes and it was taking the piss out of canonfags.

The Simpsons is devoid of character development. This is classic rose-tinted perceptions of early Simpsons seasons. The show used to be more character driven rather than by random events that our dumb, stereotypical characters are involved in, but it's not like they developed. How many times must Bart learn to be a better student? How many times must Homer and Marge have a rough marital situation and only at the last second be brought back from the brink? The characters are stagnant as can be, how can you say with a straight face that there's any form of character development?
