It wasn't a 'nod' to Inferno. Jack was supposed to be Dante while the dude talking was Virgil. It's a stupid awful idea and I'm glad I didn't watch all of it

Some things are inherently evil and wrong no matter how much you try to rationalize it, or worse, raise them to the level of something good (in Jack's case, art).
