I'm a total noob at cinematography
How do I begin to understand things like framing, composition, lighting, colors and what those choices mean?

dude just point the camera and start recording lmao

like most things find the dominant book in the area, read it, and take everything it says with a grain of salt

Those choices don't mean anything

It sounds retarded but watch more movies. Or, watch the same ones repeatedly to get a better understanding for how they're shot, and how these choices are different from other movies.

this. the more you over think it the worse your film will be. Look at Clerks by the fucking no talent ass clown Kevin Smith. Smith doesn't know SHIT about film making, but Clerks was successful DESPITE the stupid 'artistic' shit he tried to do behind the camera. The story saved the movie and now he can molest his daughter in peace while burning every executive who has an ounce of faith in his 'talent'.

Use common sense and you'll be 1000000% better than 99% of ALL professional Hollywood cinematographers.

learn photography

watch this for a lesson in perfect framing and composition (and a lot of well done fades) without being showy or un-natural, then watch the next movie he filmed "Taxi Driver" and realize you never noticed how great that was filmed, too bad for Scorsese he didn't retain him as a lot of his later films look like ass

It’s about feel and less about technicality. Use your intuition to determine what it will look like.

Watch youtube videos and get lots of practice. Trade school programs don't hurt.

Why come to Yea Forums for this advice?

this. 99% of people here don't even know how the manual mode on their smartphone camera works

this. the more movies you watch the more you'll be able to naturally understand what's effective and what's not.

According to up-and-coming director Jennette McCurdy's YouTube video, directors "shot-list" meaning they map out where the camera and characters will be in every single shot.

Quadrants, yo.

yes, nice

Just make shit and learn along the way. 90% of theory is useless. Just watch Napoleon Dynamite if you want to see something with good, yet simple, cinematography.

watch alot of denny villeneuve and you can cinemetography too.
