I bought the Japanese novelization of the film to help me learn and it’s surprising how much it helps. If I hadn’t seen the film or had only seen it once, it might be very difficult, but since I’ve seen it 12 times, I can pick out the pattern of events very easily and more quickly discern the meaning of kanji and other words from context.

For example I very quickly found the exact page where Alita says she likes oranges since yesterday because it was after the street motor ball scene and how she said Ido wants her to return home and Hugo asks her if she wants a ride 乗っていくか? and it’s really very pleasent how I can just replay the movie in my head. Strangely easier to read this than the original Gunnm comic, which I also imported, but if I read the comic twelve times maybe that would help! (＾O＾)

This spirals into her finding out about the hunter warriors and the women being killed, facing against the centurion, and being saved by Hugo, all on her own. Of course each of these transpires come into play even more later, but it practically spells out the rest of the film in a one minute sequence. Ido realizes all this has happened and he comes up and wraps his arm around her, still trying to keep her contained.
