Why is this film so underrated? People probably walked into it expecting a budget ripoff Alien™ film, and instead got the best Doom movie ever made. It probably was only rated poorly because of the religious themes.

how many cuts does this movie have?
not enough, all the really interesting stuff was left out and ended up destroyed
trust me, this film was not rated poorly for "religious themes"
having scary gore does not make a movie good
So what was bad about it? You should be able to tell me if you don't form all your opinions around what professional movie critics said 20 years ago.
Starts off strong
Really falls apart by the 3rd act
Ending is pretty weak, especially the CGI
>especially the CGI
At least it's used somewhat sparingly. The practical effects used held up great. DJ's vivisected body looked real.
There's too much stupid shit in this movie, like that one black dude jetpacking back to the horizon
it rips off the shining
the ending isn't scary at all and is pure schlock compared to the starting act
It's influential but
>influential =/ good
Unadulterated kino. A surefire way of detecting whether someone is a plebeian is their opinion on this movie.
it's a masterpiece until the black survives and comes back, then it turns into a comedy with cheap sound effects
But what did you expect from the director of Resident Evil? What's weird is how good the movie is before that
This.
I watched this after hearing for years about how great it was, and man was it a disappointment. It was like 4/10. Some decent effects and visuals, but otherwise just bad.
>like the effects
>only criticism is "it's just bad"
This is how I know you're a capeshit loving simpleton
>the ending isn't scary at all and is pure schlock
I agree. The movie should have ended with Weir taking the crew to Hell.
>the gateway is open! and you are ALL coming with me!
>DO YOU SEE?
very lovecraft
Inb4 spoiler on OP pic
>appreciating good practical effects means you like capeshit
Is this the most retarded post currently on this board?
I wonder why there aren't more biblical/lovecraft inspired films about ancient evil? Why would normalcattle rather watch endless capeshit and generic ghost horror movies? This film was special.
it's not destroyed per se. just the only prints surviving are VHS workprint tapes and unsuitable to be edited back into the film.
>unsuitable to be edited back into the film.
And they still won't release them all online, even though it's clear there will never be a director's cut and they can't monetize them. They STILL won't release them. For some reason.
hmm
there's a ton of catholic themed horror flicks. there was a veritable glut of it at the end of the 90ies. lovecraft flicks are also a diamond dozen. it's just that almost none of either are any fucking good.
Shiieeet, I want a prequel about first ship and what happened to it with all the gore orgies and shit
pretty sure there's deleted scenes on the DVD/BD
the design in this movie is absolute master class
true lovecraftian kino
The only thing it was in need of aesthetically was a darker, more ambient soundtrack. Not too soft though, a filthy, harsh and droning ambiance that makes you feel sick.
This film is actually about CERN.
>inb4 muh 40k prequel
Event Horizon is pure shit.
It's really, really bad movie. I liked it as a kid because of the gore, but on a rewatch there really isn't that much of it. Not much at all in fact. The rest of it is just generic scifi fodder with very little substance. Dosn't even look very good. Starship Troopers came out around the same time and makes the gore in Event Horizon look like the Teletubbies.
Event Horizon went way, waaaay over your little fedora-topped head.
It's a textbook example of a film butchered by producers and their team of market analysts. They cut out way too much, every character was supposed to be more fleshed out, have their own kind of "warp hallucinations" based on their traumas and so on. Instead it got cut and everything suddenly goes from being relatively calm to full on nightmare in just a couple of minutes, with no build up or character building at all.
Also that wonky ass scene with the black guy in a jetpack feels very much like the producers forcing a comic relief scene into the film because their market analysts thought it was necessary, as it feels extremely misplaced considering the tone of the rest of the film.
It was just a movie about cryogenic sleep nightmares. Very boring movie.
It was the 90's. In the jaded glazed over eyes of focus groups, every movie needed a funny token black guy.
The visions of hell legitimately made me feel nauseous. Unsettling and evokes pure dread. Why did they cut most of it out?
good post tbqh
Come on, am I really the only one itt who thinks this would have been a good ending? It was already a pretty fucking grim movie, go all the way. Leave the audience with a pit in their stomach.
Memorable design, fun cast, cool atmosphere, shit movie
More than a goth girl looking for attention
To get a lower rating. Big shame they lost all the cut footage.
Didn't they find all the footage in a salt mine in Transylvania?
Director is a talentless hack though
as far as i know, it was too degraded to use.
its a slasher about space demons. its still the best production in its genre
>all these things about it are good
>it's shit tho lol
??????
eh, it was good closure to fishburns character, he lost his last crew so he sacrifices himself to save what's left of the current crew and confronts his demons.
His inability to define his criticism of Event Horizon is what makes him a cape loving faggot...and your inability to figure that out makes you a retard.
>"just bad"
Language is what sets us apart from the monkeys---Things are not "just bad". There are specific things you dislike for specific reasons.
Spitting a number out isn't enough. This is why nobody takes movie reviews seriously.
>best Doom movie ever made
Sorry buddy, it was a 40k movie about the invention of warp travel. The writers just couldn't get the rights to use the Warhammer name.
The "I'M DIRECTING" autistic editing. Looks like a video eurodance music from the early 2000's. It's an awful movie.
Paul WS Anderson
it takes a special kind of hack to ruin a movie even with such good aspects
This, Paul Worthless Shit Anderson everybody.
magical black man miraculously surviving and whooping while he saves the day
From what i heard the test screen audience hated the original version and the studios execs, that gave our guy full control over his movie, went in and started deleting shit left and right with zero fucks given.
Are you legit autistic?
His version of the movie got butchered by the suits against his wishes.
