Whether he did or not doesn't matter. The point is he easily could've and without that "confession" his fellows are too shallow and self-absorbed to notice him.

People get too caught up on what was happening in his mind vs. what was actually happening, and that was never the point. Read up on surrealism and postmodern art. The point of those is to represent subconscious or deeper truths, to get at something more true than realism can. American Psycho is about the vicious, corrupt, soullessness of 80s corporate America. The whole serial killer thing is meant to represent how these guys made tons of money and were treated like kings for being monsters. And that system was designed to protect them, which is what the ending represents - he got away with it, because the whole system was designed to protect his monstrousness.

Nah, I'm pretty sure it wasn't about how the system protects them but more about how self-centered everyone is. First Patrick gets mistaken for someone else right before the business card scene, and then at the end of the movie they mistakenly think the person he killed is just on vacation
