I don't think Lovecraft horror works anymore. It worked back then because everyone was dumb as bricks but even dumb people today have concepts of space and shit. I say this as someone who has read Lovecraft and have an anthology book on my dresser across the room.
It's fun, I like reading it but it doesn't fill me with existential dread.

Nothing really, Cthulhu was the most wild and bizarre creature he could come up with st the time, all he was really trying to get across was a monster so otherworldly that it wasn’t possible to comprehend it. I think people took the whole thing way too literally, cosmic horror isn’t about tentacle monsters it’s about fear of the unknown/knowable and the knowledge that we only perceive a small chunk of reality, and that beyond that are things that could destroy everything in an instant. I wonder what the first people to use microscopes felt, that must have been a horrifying experience
