Every mention of the spice gas is orange at least. It's also said to smell of cinnamon multiple times which doesn't make me think blue.

I've only read the first two books so I was basing what I said on those. Whenever the guild steersmen are mentioned in Messiah it's accompanied by the description of the orange spice gas they live in in their tanks. I think in the first book there's no reference to the spices actual color aside from the description of the water of life glowing blue which is clearly a bit different. I think reddish brown until it reaches high potency being blue probably makes sense. Could be wrong anyway been a bit since I read even those two.

Just finished reading the book this week. What was with the pacing? It was a slow buildup for 700 pages, then Paul finally unlocks his full power level and the plot zoom zooms and concludes in about 100 pages. I mean I understand it's partly done to show how Paul perceives time - all events just kinda blur together after he becomes MuaDib. But still, it left me very unsatisfied

Only if youre talking about popularity, but even at that it doesnt even come close to LOTR, Dune is much more of a cult following, it never really gained widespread popularity. If youre talking about writing then you have to be joking. Herbert was a terrible writer. He got it right with the first book, Dune, and created an universe with lots of potential for development, but he absolutely shat the bed with the sequels. They are repetitive in themes and full of cringeworthy passages and dialogues.
