Don't really care about the politics of the movie or the way it was marketed, but was the hype surrounding it really bigger than Wonder Woman? I have a lot of friends who love capeshit, but they were very lukewarm on this one.
It was obviously going to be successful as it's a Marvel IP, but CM crossing $800 million does surprise me.
What does Yea Forums think about this?
Don't really care about the politics of the movie or the way it was marketed...
Other urls found in this thread:
i thought it would have trouble getting past 800 million, but it will probably break 1 billion
True. I felt like the hype and unanimous acclaim for Wonder Woman was much bigger than this.
It's capeshit so who fucking cares. That's what I think.
People aren't seeing the movie because it's good (because it's literately the worst MCU film), they're only seeing it because it's "woke" and "in" to support SJW movies like this and Black Panther.
Captain Marvel is seriously hot garbage.
And the problem with CM isn't that she's a girl either because WW looks leagues better and seems to have actual soul. I noticed the same thing too.
All memes aside Captain Marvel was really good

>past Wonder Woman
OHNONONONO
It is probably getting a solid 50% boost from being the sort of mini-prequel to endgame, one of the most hyped movies/cliffhangers ever, wonder woman had everything going against it with DC being a train wreck.
Did anybody actually laugh in this movie during their viewing? I didn't and normies only laughed at the first two times the cat ate something. And after they kept pulling that joke, nobody laughed anymore.
So it's not worth watching in theatres then? I'm thinking of going to the kinoplex this weekend.
Honestly, no, it's terrible. And I'm not shitting on it for politics or because she's a girl either. It's legitimately the worst Marvel film I've seen. I haven't seen Fant4stic, but it makes that look good. The lead actress is a charisma vacuum, Samuel L Jackson isn't great in this and the villains aren't remotely interesting either. Ben Mendelson's character is the only remotely decent thing about the movie. It's such a souless movie and it feels like they were more concerned with ticking off diversity boxes than making a good film.
Oh cool. Thanks for saving me some shekels, user.

Good point.
Been watching the press stuff for this movie. Brie Larson isn't good at being funny.
This feels so fake. I still don't know anyone in real life who even went to see it and the people I know are the kind who almost always watch Marvel shit. Is anyone actually watching this movie or is it all fake?
The only reason this movie wasn't a failure is because it's linked to Endgame
If Marvel had said that this movie was only going to be just an origin movie and that Brie wasn't gonna be in Endgame do you think the numbers would have been the same?
Kek
But that's just because of the name. Wonder Woman has been a beloved character for 40+ years.
But Wonder Woman is DC so that held back its box office potential.
The success of Captain Marvel should not have surprised anyone after the success of Black Panther. Unlike DC, Marvel has the ability to blockbust with even its lesser known characters.
No problem. Just save the cash for End Game and buy some popcorn with your ticket. That's a much better use of the money you'd use on this film.
>Been watching the press stuff for this movie. Brie Larson isn't good at being funny.
They try their hardest to make her funny in the movie and it never lands. She's the most unfunny and un-charismatic actor in the MCU right now. Link related. youtube.com
Yeah I wanted to post the same thing, but people start calling you a DC shill when you say that. Plus, those empty theatre pics on social media and Fandango buying tickets for people that never show up.. something doesn't add up.
>The only reason this movie wasn't a failure is because it's linked to Endgame
If this movie came out after End Game, I seriously doubt anybody would have given a fuck about it. As soon as End Game is done, I'm probably out of the MCU as well.
Current consensus is that Disney is buying tickets. Makes sense because they need CM to appear likable because she's the lead of the new phase after End Game.
my mom wanted to go see wonder woman so its got that going for it.
im into capeshit and have never really heard of captain marvel before the movie got greenlit
This is wrong and a meme.
DC made a killing with a tertiary character whose power is talking to fish.
And also "Suicide Squad", a group of literal whos and D-listers.
If you had told me that there was a 5 minute sequence where Brie Larson had no choice but to fight with her feet (with no shoes on), I wouldn't believe you. How the fuck did that make it into the movie?
The woman does have gorgeous feet. ;)
Aquaman is still a more famous character than either Captain Marvel or Black Panther.
I knew who Aquaman was as a kid 35 years ago but I'd never heard of captain Marvel until two years ago.
I dont know anything about Suicide Squad so cannot comment.
Yes. Wonder Woman was mostly notable for being the first halfway decent superhero movie with a female lead. Captain Marvel actually has the added benefit of being part of the MCU and coming out shortly before Endgame which means basically a guaranteed billion
I live in India (inb4 tired pajeet memes) and nobody here is aware of Brie Larson's politics or the way they're marketing this movie. Capeshit does really well here, but nobody is hyped for this one because the trailers look boring. Even the girls at my college aren't going to watch it. They've bought out more screens than all Bollywood and regional Indian films combined here. It's a nuisance.
craziest movie theater experience? you ever see people setting off fireworks?
Not personally, but in the rural parts and small towns, when some really anticipated Bollywood movie releases, people set fireworks outside the theatre, especially if it's around Diwali, which is a prime release date here.
neat
I disagree. People are seeing it mostly for completionist sake.
>Current consensus is that Disney is buying tickets.
Imagine being this brainwashed by a Taiwanese Turtle Breeding Forum.
>People aren't seeing the movie because it's good (because it's literately the worst MCU film), they're only seeing it because it's "woke" and "in" to support SJW movies like this and Black Panther.
That's not true either. They're seeing it because of the MCU brand and the fact that they need to or think they need to watch it to understand Endgame, the culmination of 20 other films they've seen.
>Current consensus is that Disney is buying tickets
Current consensus on a board full of hysterical retards who legitimately thought there was a conspiracy of theaters only playing Captain Marvel because they don't understand presales.
There's a limit to how far a 2m link to endgame can take this. I'd rather have a cthulu cat trilogy but the ga and fans liked Carol and friends. Quality wise WW is a better film overall, but that's not saying much, it's as good as the first Cap or Dr strange. Actual god tier origins movies since this whole shared universe bs began: Ironman and Guardians, Black kitten was also pretty good.
No, not really. There's nothing really cinema-worthy that makes a big screen and surround sound uplift the experience. Most of the actions setpieces are dull, the most interesting parts are in dialog and backstory. It's definitely a rental kind of film. If your theaters do cheap ticket Tuesdays, and you plan on hopping to another movie afterward, that's about the only way it's worth seeing it now.
They're also seeing it because what else are they going to see? Captain Marvel occupies probably a third or more of the screens at any given theater, and the last major movie releases were HtTYD3 and Alita. It needs to said many times in every thread: CM has absolutely no box office competition until later today when people will go see Us.
When she does her Marvel Quips© it just comes out smug and mean rather than funny. That woman truly is a charisma black hole.
>smug
I bet she did that like once and then everyone just says the movie is like that through and through. same old shit
There hasn't been any competition the whole run of this film. Why is it making money a surprise. (as in released on or after)
I tried to tell you this would be the greatest defeat in Dcuck history. All that effort to take down CM only for it to so spectacularly succeed. Lol
Btw. It will beat aquaman
>"Suicide Squad", a group of literal whos and D-listers
dontcha mean oscar winning kińó
Online shills plus fake box office reports. I know maybe one or two people who have seen this in meatspace. Don't believe the hype.
Yeah but Suicide Squad has Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie.
WW had literally zero hype and just turned out to be decent and did well by word of mouth.
Surely they can't fake the numbers this much, right? They have to pay taxes on these reported earnings.
>but was the hype surrounding it really bigger than Wonder Woman?
No. Actual "Hype" for Captain Marvel was a micron of what it was for Wonderwoman, especially after word-of-mouth confirmed it was a great movie despite being DC.
What Captain Marvel had was a larger advertising budget.
There's also the fact that it's the movie between the two Endgame finales, so it has had that going for it too.
>What Captain Marvel had was a larger advertising budget.
>source: Yea Forums shitposting
Reminder: A man pulled off pic related JUST SO they could give him the shot to make Alita, and to make her perfect.
The love there is much stronger than anything i've seen towards captain fungus, except for one autistic indian guy on facebook that EXCLUSIVELY watches marvel films.
autism isn't an admirable trait.
How lucky must I be then, that i'm not autistic
>that i'm not autistic
SOUL v SOULLESS
>source: observable reality
You honestly think Marvel has LESS money to throw at advertising than DC?
I also don't remember Wonderwoman's advertising budget including things like screenings for empty theaters, massive ticket "give-aways" and having review-sites literally alter their fundamental mechanics due to the reception not being positive enough.
Based response.
;)
Disney bought a lot of tickets for both Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Many free tickets were given to black kids and teens at schools. Black celebrities also bought a shitton of tickets for black communities.
Same with A Wrinkle in Time, but that one was so bad it still was a massive flop.
>mediocre af movie
>earning that much
How?
Is brand recognizement that powerful?
Are you kidding me? It was the film before the most anticipated film in the 21st century and everyone was told to watch that shit to understand what happens in Endgame, it could literally have been 5 minutes playtime and 115 minutes black screen and it would have done the same. Important is what happens to this shit franchise once Endgame is done and people realize all reasons they watched their capeshit are gone too. The film after the first movie of Endgame will be the important one to judge.
They're gonna ease into the new characters after endgame. Gotg 3, Strange 2, Spiderman 2, Wasp movie will be majority of phase 4
Oh and also black widow standalone and cm 2
The period was also very good. There was nothing to watch in March.
>Aquaman is still a more famous character than either Captain Marvel or Black Panther.
lol nope
He literally is though.
Even if people recognize him as "that lame/outdated superhero, ha ha ha", he was still more widely socially recognizable a super-hero (before the current advent of super-hero movie mania) by the general public than Black Panther or ESPECIALLY Captain Marvel ever were.
Aquaman has an undeniably larger cultural footprint than Captain Marvel or Black Panther, even if in the modern era that irreconcilability was treated as a source of humor.
Keep trying yourself that
>keep trying yourself that
What language is this, Jamal?
No one liked this movie
It's the movie you watch right before end game because you are tired of waiting. There is nothing memorable about it and nothing people talk about afterwards. It just exists to milk money from manchildren waiting for their capeshit conclusion.
Being sandwiched between the 2 biggest MCU movies really boosted it. I don't think it would soar that high with a different release order.
Nobody laughed in the theater that I went to but people cheered during the after credit scene.
On par with the other Phase 1 movies because that's more or less where it belongs.
Everything about that movie is astroturfing and fake news.
>tfw communists are choking on a multimedia conglomerates dick to “btfo” the “nazis”
What a strange timeline.
it's genius marketing when you think about it
up there with 'the people who didn't buy this worship the devil'
Yeah. It's called antagonistic marketting. Fake outrage to make people fight for free advertising. Look at that Gillette ad.
H-have sex, you fucking incel bigots.
Kek
You can only do so much
Fucking hilarious
even the "amazing CGI de-aging" of sam jackson is mostly fake
Yeah it's just wig and makeup.
(The Irishman coming soon)
It is odd to see how successful it is considering hardly anyone I spoke to has talked about it in whereas they wouldn't shut the fuck up about the likes of Wonder Woman.
t.wagie in a call center for Comcast xfinity
>tfw hate Wonder Woman but still think this is ridiculous
Worse yet, it might beat Civil War which was huge and everyone was talking about
Someone made a good point that far more than the profits from this movie are on the line.
Disney is selling and billions of that is in shares, if Captain Marvel was not doing well at this time the amount they would lose in a drop in share value would be colossal. So don't be a dumb cunt who thinks a company this rich abd stays that rich wouldn't do something like that.
That would explain a big opening, but this shit has 0 relevant stuff to Endgame and it's bland as fuck, and it's still holding better in coming weeks than Civil War and Homecoming
I don't know a single person who saw it. This is so clearly manufactured hype.
Yep. I know a lot more people who watched Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool.
>was the hype surrounding it really bigger than Wonder Woman?
Probably not, but the marketing was. I keep seeing people underestimate marketing. Why does nobody understand MARKETING WORKS? Disney pulled a war-like effort to reshape reality into one where Captain Marvel was some kind of a significant cultural phenomenon instead of, well, a bland adventure movie.
I think it's a psyop by Disney that doesn't care if it loses money, and splits the revenues or gives most of it to theaters.
Gay
>DC
>MAGA
Now the incels are trying really hard now.
How can a movie so mediocre make so much money? Is this the ultimate white-knight virtue signaling movie? My brain hurts trying to figure out why.
>How can a movie so mediocre make so much money?
Avatar will forever be the proof of concept that a mediocre movies can be successful if you associate them with a gimmick. Back then it was the 3D revival, with Captain Marvel it's feminism or whatever.
It's got the similar stuff going for it as wonder woman did but what it lacked in a likeable lead and some sense of care, It's got the added bonus of being a marvel movie so people are more likely to trust it as well as it being the movie before a 11 year buildup
looks like DCucks are still coping hard lmao
I even heard some normies mention Wonder Woman as if it was a Marvel movie.
The brand brainwashing there is with Marvel is frightening.
Pretty much, while I think the likes of BvS is definitely a step in the wrong direction, just how much of that is "it wasn't like an MCU movie so it's bad?"
Oh yeah, it's another episode of /pol/ cucks on Yea Forums completely and utterly BTFO yet again. I wonder when is the next episode.
Based.
This. Disney is paying money for the appearance of success. It's the only thing I'll believe.
What matters is that still nobody likes this shit character
This is every episode. Yea Forums is a formulaic show.
>was the hype surrounding it really bigger than Wonder Woman?
I like to use my own little bubble as reference during comparisons, and this didn't breach my bubble, so "NO!", it wasn't.
