All that wankery the director did before it came out about how it's a "real movie" and not a "CGI fuckathon". The CGI was limited but boy oh boy he missed the mark big time on it being a "real movie".
Not only does he have to make Logan stare directly at the camera and tell us (or, an impressionable Laura) this, but he holds the comic book in one hand and Shane in the other, asking us which entertainment we'll choose.
And then 15 minutes later we meet an evil laboratory-made clone of Logan, the most common comic book trope in existence. I've never seen a movie insult itself so hard.

Because thematically he had to fight the man had to literally fight his animalistic beast side. Thematically the lesson is that family makes him stronger and he's been running from that his entire life and any oppertunity to embrace it results in death with the exception of his daughter. Bringing in his brother for one last show down would betray the theme of finding redemption in family.

Because they thought it would be too reliant on earlier movies. They'd have to give Sabertooth a monologue about why he's here, a reminder to the audience of who he is, etc. Instead they went with the very great silent shot of Logan seeing himself come down the stairs.
But they were definitely thinking about it. You can see Liev Schrieber's face imposed for some computer test footage for a scene that never was filmed.

This movie could've been good but the third act it fucked it all up.
