Suicide Squad is your average standalone movie. Alita was made as the 1st part of a trilogy or even larger movie franchise. If it had made 800+ million there would already be an announcement about Alita 2 and 3. The fact that there's still no word about sequels and Rodriguez moved on to a different project is very grim for Alita's future prospects. I guess we'll have to wait until 2020 for Avatar 2 to gross 3 billion so that Cameron can make Disney cough up some dough for Alita sequels.

I admire your optimism, however, let's be real here. This movie was fucked in the ass by critics in capeshit pocket / bandwagon. And even if it recovered from a near flop and had good viewer reviews with time, it will just be dismissed as ''weebs spamming the internet'' AKA not the most profitable market - Like captain marvel or avengers:endgame will be.

All we need to do is build that fanbase, when blu-rays hit buy one, and show it to all your friends and family. Buy a copy and give it to someone else as a gift. If BR/Streaming sales are strong enough it will prove there is a market for it.
I think the biggest thing holding Alita back was the fact that no one actually saw it, and they didn't see it because it was a new name none of them had heard of, battle angel doesn't have wide recognition, and critics said it was meh, but when people see it generally they like it. All that needs to be done is to get it out there.

An optimist, but also a realist I see. No, we're only viewing the reception from the eyes of Yea Forums, this general. I think Cameron didn't even want the film to be compared to Captain Marvel, they had drastically different outsets, marketing costs, and so on. All their measurement of success was if they made "any money" and if people liked it, which judging by social media and everyone screaming for the movie's success, moreso than many other similar films that ended up getting a sequel, this film has a lot of people backing it, normies, anime fans, etc. The name Alita is out there now, the fact this movie even did almost 90 million US on a niche manga not many have heard of, with no marketing, is a testament to audience appreciation of it. The crew knows how much fans love it and that's what matters a lot, even above box office. Like I said in a previous thread, imagine if the movie did about 50 to 100 million less, and did less favorably from audiences, of course the sequel would be scrapped. But 400 million plus and audiences fucking loving it, it will happen.

Another example of this type of progression in a series is Fast and Furious. Its had some downer box office numbers. It almost became a direct to dvd series a few times. It did have solid success at first though I think.

LET ME BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU:
1) the marketing budget for Alita was small.
Posters and shit on the streets doesn't amount to much, TV-spots and airing time is what really ramps up the price.
There was not much of it. Seem like FOX didn't have much interest in pushing this movie since they had their hands full with the Disney merger and it was their last movie.
2) the marketing material wasn't that great, they messed up
3) the anti-marketing by Disney shills really hurt the bottom line of this movie
4) That Captain Marvel disaster didn't help but took attention away, which fueled the shills, which turned off the general audience
Now for the good news.
1) the break even point is probably on the lower end of what was projected.
this movie will be (already is) profitable. Blue Ray sales and TV/streaming licenses will push this movie far into profitable territory.
2) word of mouth is killing it, in all my years i have never seen an fanatic/cult-like fandom created in such a short time. What it doesn't have in number, it makes up in passion, love and fierceness. The target audience is universal, nobody is left out (except dumb leftist)
3) the anti-marketing of Disney if it gets out with solid proof could really REALLY hurt Disney and push Alita in the long run.
People don't like to be told what they should not do (watch Alita). If word gets out into mainstream of how badly Disney manipulated the public this could potentially uplift Alita into unseen heights (the cult-status it deserves).
4) Alita is on the right side of history, it shows an normal, healthy, pretty rare (in modern times) female archetype and people all over the world want exactly this while slowly rejecting the PC/SJW agenda more and more.
5) WETA will earn an Oscar nomination for their work on Alita with actual chances to get it.

Lets stick with that example. Captain Marvel made a shitton of money, but people don't love it because it was mediocre. One year from now, nobody will care about this movie (probably even earlier than that).
The passion of the fan-base is something that goes on forever.
Studios, Cinema chains etc, the whole chain of media production is very much aware of whats happening here, these people are not stupid.
Its not an isolated, echo chamber kind of thing. People take notice that people watched a movie 30 times in the cinema. This is a phenomenon that i've NEVER EVER seen with another new franchise.
As someone who read the manga 15 years ago this blows my mind.
Rest assure my Alita-Bros and Sisters, there are people in high places with lots of money who are watching this drama play out and they are getting very curious and start to thinking about this and making plans.

You're right except the cult following part, I think. At least from my part, most of my friends didnt see or had enough contact with marketing to even remember Alita. All these same 15 neckbeards circlejerking isn't really a reliable statistic.
Everyone who sees it likes it, but not many have see it yet. And when they do, it will have died down by that time, unless something weird happens.
What could also happen, a bit farfetched, but when capeshit dies down a bit and they think about exploring other markets, and they notice the anime niche because of this movie, the big corporate heads might just go for some shitty adptation of a more popular anime, say, Naruto the movie starring nicolas cage or some shit like that.
