It's based on a nonfiction book by Cameron Crowe (who also made Almost Famous essentially as an autobiography), where he went undercover as a high school student, wrote about it, and changed the names. In real life, the nerd that dated the girl JJL's based on turned out be the author of Windows for Dummies.

I was expecting it to be the cornerstone of Act 3 and have this big dramatic sequence where the nerd kid cucks out and pays for her abortion or something, but instead she just does it and there's a fairly touching moment where her Brother ends up being there for her. It was just a minor event instead of the worst thing that ever happened to her in her entire life
