I just finished pic related, has anyone else seen it?. It has a daunting length, but not a minute is wasted. What a masterpiece, it's probably the greatest war film of all time.

Yi Yi

My second favorite, watched it all in one sitting, broke me

Either Yi Yi or The Terrorizers, save A Brighter Summer Day for later on.

>Korea
>that low

>ranking the filmography of entire countries
At least split it into periods; e.g. the quality of 80's Hong Kong cinema was very different than what it is today.

What about central asia? This was an experience.

I do need more Iranian cinema to watch. I’ve only seen Children of Heaven, and that’s pretty mainstream.

Kiarostami is a genuine GOAT. Close-Up and Taste of Cherries are easily top 10 of the '90s, and some of the greatest films ever made. Other than him, Farhadi, Panahi and Makhmalbaf are quite fun, but when people talk about Iran they mostly mean Kiarostami.

Btw, why are everyone so hyped about Tsai Ming-Liang? Rebels of the Neon God was a mediocre bore and most of the stuff he makes is either "le bootiful cinema meme" or boomer genre films.

Furthermore, here's the most boring theme of all time: literally two chords and generic background synth: youtube.com/watch?v=8urigjsCdNw Genuinely the most repetetive thing I've ever heard.

>Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Dude had 5 good films in 5 years. Crazy how prolific he is.

bamp

Watch last life in the universe. Its a Japanese - Thai collaboration film and one of the most beautiful films ive seen in terms of story and aesthetics. Don't really want to spoil more than that

I found it pretty cheesy and conventional, compared to say Lily Chou Chou.
Hana & Alice was much better in my opinion, although Love Letter isn't bad

name a single korean movie that compares to anything in this thread

not that guy
Memories of Murder is a genuine masterpiece

this looks like an Edward Yang film ...is it?

now don't forget it has been shot by Christopher Doyle

I watched Right Now, Wrong Then by Hong Sang-soo and enjoyed it a lot, very touching and subtle romance movie. Reminded me a bit of some of Rohmer's movies as a very interesting study of romantic relationships.

tearaway kino

More like, watch Maborosi and ignore everything he made after because they don't even come close.

Fuck i never knew that, no wonder its so good. Speaking of Ang Mo in asian production, check out the man who stole the sun

any title recommendation for chinese historical adventure war film/tv series?? bonus points if it was in medieval period.

Not even the best lcd my negro. Watch oasis first

City of Life and Death. Not medieval but it's a really good war movie.

I can't watch it first I already saw BURNING
Huo zhe

Taiwan > Hong Kong > Japan > China > South Korea

Then watch it if you haven't, brainlet

yeah, love letter is definitely his most mainstream film. i still like it.

Yoshimitsu Morita
It's a very odd film, kind of reminded me of Tampopo a bit. Speaking of Morita though, this film is a masterpiece.

now watch Kids Return

Lu Chuan's follow-up to City of Life and Death actually IS a Chinese historical adventure film, The Last Supper (2012).
It didn't get much of a release and audiences apparently didn't particularly like it.

But as for Chinese 20th century war movies, Devils on the Doorstep and Red Sorghum are the classics you have to watch.

reminds me of Evangelion
