I always thought the sequels would have been more interesting if they explored that question about the "fringes" of the simulated world, which we never see in the original movie. It's not even identified what city they live in since its supposed to be a placeholder for any city, really.

I ask this, because there are aspects of the Matrix that don't make sense of you consider them to be 1:1 with reality.
For instance, the city in the Matrix is just called "The City" and the Highway is just called "The Highway" and seems to be infinitely long and not going anywhere.
It feels like the world they live in is actually like a videogame, like GTA or something. It's just meant to look and feel real without actually being functional.

I think there was actually much more going on. Smith going rogue and developing emotions was a big plot point in the first movie ("I HATE it here!")
