I got memed into watching this by Jay Bauman. AMA.
Suspiria (2018)

It was really good.
How many significant digits do you have pi memorized to?
It was good. But it was so different from the original that they should have renamed it "Suspiriorum".
are you Mike?
No. I just thought the episode Catspaw did a better job with the portrayal and makeup of the witches Spock and McCoy encounter on Pyris VII.
How good is the cinematography?
Very good, especially the mirror room dance sequences earlier in the movie. Thought it looked slightly digital, but turns out it was shot entirely on 35mm film.
That sounds great. Regret missing it in the theatre.
How does it compare to the original? Watched that one last Wednesday and will watch this one tomorrow, what can be expected?
This.
The original plot was better, but this one felt more "hypnotizing" if you know what I mean.
Great effects. Only didn't like the mirror torture scene. Felt like to much at the point of the build up. As if they were slowly rising everything, but then decided to kick it to 10 right then and then turn it back to where it was
Almost polar opposites. The Original is all about the colorful visuals and the remake is this muted story driven horror kino.
expect it to not being like the original. Its like comparing The Thing From Another World to JC's The Thing.
Fuck off e-celeb faggot
Damn it. Really loved the colorful visuals, they enhanced the color experience imo.
>post about this on release, loved it
>Yea Forums shits on it nonstop
>rlm release a video praising it
>Yea Forums loves it while parroting the same points made in the video
EVERYTIME!
Thought it was good until the ending.
Did i miss something, was there clues?
Felt like they just pulled it out their ass at the end to resolve the story.
A lot of people were praising it here when it released.
No they weren't.
They were though, I remember the threads.
No you don't.
No I didn't like the ending either but mainly because of the choice of editing and presentation. I also think it was a really uneven film, good to great in some parts, slow and underdeveloped in other parts. Also i don't get what people see in Dakota Johnson's performance, aside from the dancing, I thought she was actually pretty terrible in comparison to every other actress in the film. Also the decision to not pitch Tinton's voice down for her dual made me laugh every time and I couldn't stop seeing the Jackass oldman skit with the makeup, it was kind of poorly done and a gimmick that was pretty retarded and non-essential. I usually agree with Jay on most movies, more than Mike honestly, his tastes are more in line with mine and he's harsher on flaws I think but I really fail to see what wowed him about this one. My friend was fawning over it too and this is one I truly do not get the praise for. I do understand why it was a divisive and polarizing film though.
I didn't care for the original but loved Call Me By Your Name. Should I watch this?
The ending does explain why she was a dancing wunderkind who already knew how to dance the company's original work, and it kinda makes sense since the Mennonites are originally from Germany, and she's a spirit returning home to the old country.
Exquisite. Very obvious homage to early film making with various marquee camera techniques such as fast panning, dramatic zoom in, a lot of mirror shots, very European.
Felt like the storytelling got jumbled with the flashbacks and the focus on the political backdrop to sufficiently explain its plot points, myself
The ending turned the movie into a Nine Inch Nail music video.

THAT'S RIGHT JAY

I agreed with this guy more, basically
it works in retrospect yea, but the movie didnt focus that much on the protag. She was more of a vessel to introduce us to this covenant of witches.
I thought a better ending would be that Blanc saved the day, so that their relationship actually meant something for the plot of the movie, kinda like the movie was building up to.
Cause my understanding is that the protag was going to side with Blanc either way and not because of their time together.
I think the division is from people who are "starved" from this kind of movie. There just arent that many slow passed thriller/horror movies coming out. So even a decent movie gets raised to appraisal.
Too bloated, especially with the old man parts, and overall rather uneven but it is, for the most part, an ok watch. Visually strong, but I greatly prefer the originals style over this, and Yorke's soundtrack was a miss for me. You can tell care and effort was put into with much success but it could use some trimming and focus.
There are better slow-paced horror films though, many that came out this decade, I get that people are starved for the small amount of quality horror we get but should mediocrity be heaped with so much praise. I think this film will be remembered like The Babadook when time passes, a film that was hyped because it was slightly smarter and better paced than the usual trash but ultimately not much was really there. I think The VVitch, Hereditary to a lesser extent, The Innkeepers and House of the Devil will have much more staying power in comparison.
Agreed, good post i think i was projecting in my post, the only reason i said "starved" was because how forgettable (I forgot) the movies in recent years have been, they almost manage to scratch the place where The Shinning has been sitting.
