I rewatched this movie a few days ago and I did find myself wondering about this.
He has this book in the toilet of the diner when it's being robbed. It's not in the briefcase; Jules has the briefcase and shows the robbers the contents. He clearly doesn't have the book when he and Jules saunter out of the restaurant (last shot of the movie, and very memorable.) However, he has the book again in the toilet when he gets shot at Butch's place (chronologically a few days later, but occurs halfway through the movie.)
In other words, where the fuck did he get the book? Did he go back to the diner and retrieve it because he was so into it?
