It's quite good and still holds up to this day. Too bad the director hasn't done anything even closer anymore.

The only other films I know of his is The Constant Gardener and Blindness. TCG was good but had none of the energy and bravura that City of God had. You'd never know they were done by the same filmmaker.
Blindness was so forgettable I can't even remember if I actually watched it or not.

The closest we got from City of God was a miniseries called City of Men with two of the kids from CoG.
It's really a shame that Brazilian directors don't wanna get stereotyped with crime movies because that's the best thing we have to offer.
Elite Squad 1 and 2, City of God, Estômago they were all excellent.

First half is amazing, it gets kind of meh after Seu Jorge's plot starts.

>Elite Squad 1
I watched this but never really liked it all that much. Maybe I should go back and give it a second chance and check out the sequel if I like it more this time.

ES1 is much better than ES2. If you didn't like the first, don't bother with the second.

Thematically, maybe, but the movie's strength is its style and pacing, and that's entirely absent from City of Men. COM tries to be lucid and "realistic", and because of that all the weaknesses of brazilian film and TV, like bad acting and lack of technical proficiency, become way more apparent.

Pretty good

They don't want to get stereotyped and they get opportunities to work abroad too soon for their own good.

People complain about studio systems and their formulas, but countries like Brazil really teach you to value them. Every five years we make a good movie, often it's a crime movie, and when that happens the directors, who usually got funding from several different public and private sources instead of a proper studio, tend to just leave the country to work on something completely different. There's no machine to pop out similar movies when a director happens to catch lighting in a bottle.

puta merda

They make movies not for the local audience but to get recognized outside Brazil. Instead of aiming for US we should be aiming for Japan or South Korea which developed their own style and can make good movies without an imense budget.
I love how a lot of South Korean movies are about corruption

damn at least he found a honest job

For real?

Yeah. I mean it's an honest job but he should be better than that

who the fuck gave all these kids guns?

The gangsters for use as soldiers in the gang war

Great movie. Add, dare I say it, Kino.
