He is the only charactet that actually opens up to investigation. You may not like the character itself, but saying that it's not interesting makes no sense when the entire plot revolves around him. Why is he so obsessed with Darth Vader? Will he, or will he not accept the Dark Side? Will our heroes manage to bring him back, or will he die as an evil person? What's his endgame and how does it relate to the First Order? How did he come to meet and join Snoke?
Rey also opened up a nice can of questions in TFA, but since she was just an stranger that happened to find herself into the plot instead of being an integral part of it, she was not as interesting to ask about. Comparatively, Poe is basically a token badass guy and Finn's plot value as a traitor of the FO gets disregarded very quickly, leaving him as comedic relief and little more.
Of course, TLJ kicked all of these questions aside so Rian could have his subversion, but at the beggining that was there. Again, you may not like it, or you might personally hold no interest in these questions, but that lies on you, not the character itself.

the characters in the OT are basically archetypes and the story itself is a fairytale. thats what people don't get when they try to compare the sequels to the OT, especially when the try and compare Snoke to the Emperor. Lucas himself said that Palpatine was basically the Devil and thats all you really need to know about him. He's there to tempt Luke. You don't need to know his name or his backstory.

Why would anyone be interested in Episode IX with Snoke, Luke, and Han dead? That Artoo and Chewie as well as C3PO are relegated to background roles, that Poe got completely neutered by Leia and Holdo in TLJ? There's nothing interesting about the future of this franchise.

The problem here is the idea that Snoke never said a thing about it until that very point, and him doing a 360 from in one day. But that´s where the script fails. The foundation of Kylo as a character is a forced event that´s so out of Luke´s character that is just not believable within the stablished universe.

The problem to me is that with the tone they gave the movie they should have explored that relationship before offing Han. Not only it was not explored, it was almost dropped to focus on his Luke conflict... so 2 movies in his character arc is not yet defined (Though unlike Rey at least he have one (more actually) but more to the point none of the ones he has really links him to Rey-Rey in an antagonic way.

And the Vader stuff that they conveniently dropped halfway through. So much for finishing what he started...
